Beloved actor and Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges would return for a sequel to the 1998 cult favorite The Big Lebowski. But he has certain demands. Speaking with People, Bridges sounds more than willing to bring back The Dude for another adventure, and while this may have you preparing yourself a White Russian, he does stipulate that the Coen Brothers would have to be involved.
“Oh God! If the brothers were involved, I certainly would.”
Now, while it’s highly unlikely that the Coen Brothers would ever conceive of a sequel to The Big Lebowski (the filmmaking duo has actually never made a direct sequel), Bridges is well aware how mysterious Ethan Coen and Joel Coen are. And would not be hugely surprised if they suddenly showed up at his door with a pitch for The Big Lebowski 2: The Dude Abides.

“The brothers, they’re mysterious and full of surprises. You don’t know what they’re going to do, so since they’re surprising, I don’t think they’ll make a sequel. But like I say, they’re surprising, so maybe they’ll surprise me and make a sequel.”
Written by Joel and Ethan Coen and directed by just Joel Coen, The Big Lebowski finds Jeff Bridges starring in by far one of his most iconic roles as slacker and bowling enthusiast Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski. The Dude is a lovable, laid-back, easy-going burnout who just so happens to have the same name as a millionaire whose wife owes a lot of dangerous people a whole bunch of money, which results in the Dude having his precious rug soiled and sends him spiraling into the Los Angeles underworld.

The Big Lebowski Remains a Classic Among the Coen Brothers Filmography

You may be surprised to learn that The Big Lebowski was met with largely mixed reviews upon release, but over time the cinematic community has come to realize the brilliance of the Coen Brothers’ crime comedy caper. Remaining a cult favorite and an underrated classic among the Coen Brothers’ hugely impressive filmography, The Big Lebowski was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress back in 2014, an honor given to the movie for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
While we await what would be a very surprising sequel, but one that Jeff Bridges would be delighted to star in, a spinoff titled The Jesus Rolls was released in 2020. Though based on the response you may want to steer clear, and instead wonder what a direct sequel would be like…
As for Jeff Bridges, the actor recently beat cancer and can currently be seen leading the action thriller series The Old Man on FX, which has been renewed for a second season.
The Coen Brothers meanwhile have been working apart from each other for the last few years, with Joel Coen directing the critically acclaimed The Tragedy of Macbeth starring Denzel Washington back in 2021. Ethan Coen meanwhile will next write, produce, and direct the upcoming comedy Drive-Away Dolls, which is set to be released by Focus Features on September 22, 2023.
