Actor John Corbett is rethinking, and regretting, his life choices. Despite being the star of TV hits like Northern Exposure and films like the My Big Fat Greek Wedding series, the 63-year-old finds his acting career “unfufilling.” Corbett made the admission to Dana Carvey and David Spade on their podcast, Fly on the Wall.
During the interview, the Sex and the City star lamented, somewhat facetiously, that he made a mistake choosing his career in acting. Despite having a successful career and being recognized in public often for his work, he says he feels “unfulfilled” because he hasn’t been as creative as he wanted. He told the duo, sarcastically:
I picked the f*****g wrong thing to do with my life.
Corbett discussed that his biggest regret is a career that was limited to just acting. Despite his success, he wants more input in the creative process.
I’ve made a lot of money. I live in a beautiful home. People come to me at every restaurant I go in. I’m a friend of the world, but as far as a fulfilling creative work life, I didn’t write one f*****g line. I didn’t write one joke to make people laugh. So it’s been unfulfilling on that level.”
He cited Emma Stone as an actor who participates in the creative process, in films like Poor Things. Ironically, one of his biggest roles, in the My Big Fat Wedding films, is written by star Nia Vardalos, who has creative control of the process. That’s something Corbett wants.
I’m not collaborating with the writers…Have you ever sat in a waiting room of a doctor’s office for like an hour and been like, ‘What the f**k?’ For me, that’s what making a movie is like, because I’m not part of any creative process.
Corbett also knows his talents and strengths are best utilized in the television medium rather than film. That was evident in his role last year in How I Met Your Father, the Hulu comedy series headlined by Hilary Duff.
I’m not a movie actor…I’m really a television actor and so that has to move quick and that guy’s got to make a million decisions. And we’re not shucking and jiving and going out for wine after. And so I’m just at this point in my life…if something seems really, really fun, I’ll say yes.
The Career of John Corbett
John Corbett’s first credited role was in an episode of The Wonder Years, and followed that up with small roles in films like Tombstone, before landing the role of Chris Stevens in Northern Exposure in 1990. The role earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 1992. His later TV work included roles in The United States of Tara and Parenthood.
In many of his major roles, Corbett joked that he “always plays the boyfriend,” but still manages to make an impression with that type of role. Last year, he reprised his role as Aidan Shaw, the boyfriend of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) in the second season of And Just Like That, the Sex and the City sequel series. It was recently revealed that he will return for season three of the Max series. His other film roles include Serendipity and The Boy Next Door.
The West Virginia native has been married to actress Bo Derek since 2020.
