Margot Robbie Didn’t Think the Barbie Movie Would Ever Get Greenlit

The recent trailer release for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie reveals just how bonkers the film appears to be. The film, co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, features Margot Robbie as one of many Barbies living in Barbie Land alongside Ryan Gosling as one Ken of many. The live-action imagining of Barbie Land is a sight to behold from the trailer alone, and while it looks the film could be a lot of fun for fans, Robbie had serious doubts ever since she read the script that such a movie would ever studio support.

“The first time I read the Barbie script, my reaction was, ‘Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day, because they are never going to let us make this movie.’ But they did,” Robbie tells BAFTA, per IndieWire.

Full plot details haven’t been released, though the trailer suggests that Barbie (Robbie) and Ken (Gosling) end up taking the pink convertible out of Barbie Land and into the real world. Warner Bros. also teases in an official description that “to live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.”

For her part, Robbie can’t share any additional details about the plot or what else she saw in the script, only noting, “Can’t tell ya!”

Other stars from the film have teased what fans can expect from Barbie. Emma Mackey told Total Film that it was the “most fun I’ve ever had in my life.” Simu Liu said the “crazy” script was among the best his agent had ever read. Will Ferrell, who plays the CEO of Mattel in the movie, also shared his opinion that the movie has a “fantastic” script.

“It is in my humble opinion, the ultimate example of high art and low art. It’s a loving homage to the brand and, at the same time, couldn’t be more satirical – just an amazing comment on male patriarchy and women in society and why Barbie’s criticized and yet why every little girl still wants to play with Barbie. Boy, when I read it, I was like, ‘This is fantastic,’” Ferrell told WSJ Magazine.

Along with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the movie stars America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatway, Scott Evans, Dua Lipa, Helen Mirren, and John Cena.

Barbie will be released in theaters on July 21, 2023. You can view the new trailer below.
