Studio Columbia Pictures, Marvel Entertainment, Arad Productions

Franchise Marvel

Kraven the Hunter is still set to be an action-packed adventure, but it will also be filled with tragedy, according to director J.C. Chandor. The origin stories of superheroes are normally not a walk in the park. Most of the main characters from Marvel or DC had to go through trauma or some tortuous moment in order to become the person they were destined to be. Whether it’s Bruce Wayne losing his parents from a very young age, or Peter Parker witnessing the death of uncle Ben, tragedy has been present in the mythology of many heroes. But when it comes to villains, things can even get worse.

Kraven the Hunter is one of the next bad guys from the Marvel Comics that will be taken to the big screen thanks to Sony Pictures’ extended universe based on the characters from the world of Spider-Man. Although the movie is looking to conquer the audience with its action scenes and spectacle, it will also offer a deep exploration of Kraven’s tragic story. In an interview with Esquire, Chandor anticipated that the movie will not only offer a fun ride, but will also offer a tragic take on the character:

“Sony probably doesn’t want me to lead with this, but the story is a tragedy. When the final credits roll on this film, if you’ve been paying attention, you won’t have the feeling that this is all going to end great.”

Who’s Kraven the Hunter?

Kraven, also known as Sergei Krávinov, first appeared in 1964’s The Amazing Spider-Man, and was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Originally introduced as one of the many villains from the large gallery connected to Spider-Man, as time passed he was also called an anti-hero many times, and fought against other heroes like Black Panther.

In the movie, Sergei will be played by an already popular name within the world of comic book adaptations, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who was part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Quicksilver/Pietro Maximoff. The cast is completed by Russell Crowe as Nikolai Kravinoff, Sergei’s father; Ariana DeBose as Calypso, another popular Marvel villain; Fred Hechinger as Dmitri Smerdyakov, Kraven’s brother also known as Chameleon; Christopher Abbott as Foreigner, a famous mercenary and assassin; and Alessandro Nivola as Aleksei Sytsevich/Rhino.

Kraven the Hunter is set to hit theaters on December 13, 2024, instead of August, and that’s after being delayed last year from its original release date of October 2023. The film wasn’t the only one affected by Sony Pictures’ schedule shake-up; Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third and final part of the animated saga, was erased from the calendar.
