Superman: Legacy, the James Gunn-directed inaugural movie in the new era of the DCU, has cast its villain. In another stand-alone casting announcement with very little in the way of fanfare, it was revealed by Deadline that María Gabriela de Faría, best known for her appearances in the Fox comedies Animal Control and The Moodys, has been cast as The Engineer in the movie.
Currently slated to begin production in early 2024, Superman: Legacy’s casting reveals have been pretty low-key for such a big and important movie to the DC franchise. While Marvel Studios has been holding back news of their Fantastic Four casting for a big combined reveal, DC Studios has been drip-feeding its Superman: Legacy announcements via social media without warning, and in a very quiet way, usually with Gunn following up with a quick post for added authenticity.
This latest casting reveal is no exception. Arriving as a stand-alone announcement, de Faria will play Angela Spice, the second character to take on the name of The Engineer, a character who debuted in the comic book series, The Authority. Spice is a brilliant scientist, transformed when she replaces her blood with nine pints of nanotechnology, gaining a host of technology-based powers and abilities. In her comic book appearances, The Engineer has the ability to transform parts of her body into weapons, connect herself to computer networks, and repair herself when injured.
On the back of the announcement, James Gunn took to his Instagram account to confirm the casting and welcome the actress to the franchise.
De Faria herself also reacted to the news, joking that people will now know what she has been working out “like a crazy person.”

Who is María Gabriela de Faría?
María Gabriela de Faría, who hails from Venezuela, initially rose to fame in Latin America through telenovelas, the Latin American equivalent of a serial drama. Her move to English-language productions saw her appear in the aforementioned Fox comedies, Animal Control, and The Moodys, as well as the Joe and Anthony Russo-produced Syfy series, Deadly Class.
In 2022, de Faria made a movie into films, landing herself a lead role in the horror movie, The Exorcism of God. Now, she has clinched a role that could be her big break-out appearance in Superman: Legacy. She joins a strong cast of stars, including David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.
James Gunn recently confirmed that there will be no delays for Superman: Legacy despite the lengthy strikes that Hollywood has endured over the last several months. This means that the movie will hold its expected release date of July 11, 2025. With Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom set to give the old DCEU a less than stunning farewell bow this December, the 18-month rest could be just what the franchise needs to wipe the slate clean.
