Patrick Stewart Continues to Hilariously Deny Involvement in Doctor Strange 2

It’s a tale as old as time with Disney’s Marvel productions. An actor is rumored to be involved in a Marvel production, and they deny all involvement until it comes out. So it’s no surprise that Sir Patrick Stewart has been denying his involvement in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness even though we can quite clearly hear his voice in the trailer, having gone so far as to claim it was an impersonator at one point.

In a recent interview while doing press for season 2 of Star Trek: Picard, Stewart has taken it even further. In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment’s Ethan Alter, the topic of the Doctor Strange trailer came up. Stewart’s response of “Who’s Doctor Strange?” was the perfect response from the acclaimed actor.

Of course, actors denying involvement in Marvel projects is nothing new. Andrew Garfield famously denied he was in Spider-Man: No Way Home right up until the movie’s premiere despite being prominently in the film. Many Marvel fans have come to believe that the stronger an actor denies involvement in a project, the higher the likelihood that they are, in fact, in said project.

In this case, however, there is no mistaking Stewart’s voice in the trailer, despite his insistence that the voice was done by an impersonator. Stewart’s voice is very distinct and anyone who has been a fan of his work in either X-Men or Star Trek will have no problem picking that voice out of the trailer.

Patrick Stewart is About to Regain a Guinness World Record

When Spider-Man: No Way Home came out, Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe set a new record in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest live-action portrayal of a Marvel character. The record had been held by Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman, prior to the Spider-Man pair breaking it. With his appearance as Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, his denials notwithstanding, Stewart will regain the record.

Stewart first portrayed Charles Xavier in 2000’s X-Men, but he had been a fan favorite casting choice for the role long before that, having both the look and the bearing to play the character. When his casting was announced, the news was met with universal praise, and his portrayal of the character did not disappoint.

While doing press for X-Men: Days of Future Past, Stewart talked about his first exposure to the character in an interview with Rolling Stone.

“The very first thing I ever heard about X-Men, the first time I ever heard that title used, was one afternoon when I’d been doing some ADR for Richard Donner, on a movie of his that I had been in. I got a note to call in at Lauren Shuler Donner’s office – that’s his wife, the producer. I walked in the door, Lauren picked something up from her desk and held it up. And I looked at it, and I said, “What am I doing on the front of a comic book?” And she said, “Exactly.””

Now, 22 years after first appearing as Charles Xavier, Stewart will once again grace movie theaters in the role.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will premiere in theaters on May 6, 2022.
