In the past, famed auteur director Quentin Tarantino has announced that he plans to cap his career off with ten movies and then be done with it. While we wait for his final film to be announced, fans and cinephiles alike can have something else from Tarantino to look forward to in the meantime. Per IndieWire, this will be as new book on film history entitled Cinema Speculation.
“In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans — and all movie lovers — could have hoped for,” reads the official synopsis from HarperCollins.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
“Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining. At once film criticism, film theory, a feat of reporting, and wonderful personal history, it is all written in the singular voice recognizable immediately as QT’s and with the rare perspective about cinema possible only from one of the greatest practitioners of the artform ever.”
A new career change?
According to IndieWire, Tarantino’s interest in writing books is nothing new. He sees writing books as a way to stay creative when he’s no longer working behind the camera. Previously the writer/director has written that he’d planned a separate novel about a WWII veteran who, after coming home, no longer responding to Hollywood after what he’s been through, finds refuge in international cinema.
“I’ve got this character who had been in World War II, and he saw a lot of bloodshed there,” Tarantino said of his other upcoming novel. “And now he’s back home, and it’s like the ’50s, and he doesn’t respond to movies anymore. He finds them juvenile after everything that he’s been through. As far as he’s concerned, Hollywood movies are movies. And so then, all of a sudden, he starts hearing about these foreign movies by Kurosawa and Fellini.”
However, it turns out that the book was, in fact, the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood novel. That Tarantino had adapted from his film of the same name, the ninth and penultimate entry in his filmography. Said returning veteran character was Cliff Booth, who actor Brad Pitt won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for playing.
HarperCollins has announced that Cinema Speculation will be ready for an October 25, 2022, release date. It would also be the first non-fiction book Tarantino has written. In what could possibly be a second career as a novelist once his work in the film industry is finished. It’ll also be interesting to see how well the book sells, as while Tarantino has many admirers, he has plenty of critics as well.
Tarantino has been called out for using racial slurs in his films multiple times. There’s also the discourse surrounding his portrayal of martial arts icon Bruce Lee in the above-mentioned Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. There’s also his behavior on the set of Kill Bill, where Uma Thurman was injured doing a stunt he pressured her to do. However, he has since apologized for the last one and has been forgiven by Thurman.
