Scream 7 Star Melissa Barrera Shares Response to “Shocking” Firing and Jenna Ortega’s Departure

Summary

  • Melissa Barrera opens up about her exit from Scream VII after the production collapsed in a matter of days.
  • Barrera believes that her words always came from a place of love, humanity, and human rights.
  • Jenna Ortega and Barrera have a close relationship and will support each other no matter what happens.

Melissa Barrera‘s firing from Scream VII, and the subsequent departure of Jenna Ortega from the franchise, threw the production into turmoil. While the future of the horror franchise is still unclear, Barrera has opened up about her exit from the movie.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Barrera fully addressed the “shocking” turn of events that saw Scream 7 collapse in a matter of days. She said:

I’m not the first person that’s happened to, but it was shocking. I don’t even know what to say. I think everything that happened was very transparent, on both sides, and I know who I am, and I know that what I said always came from a place of love and a place of humanity and a place of human rights and a place of freedom for people, which shouldn’t be controversial. It shouldn’t be up for debate. So, I’m very at peace. The people who know me in my family know the truth about me and where I stand, and I think most people in the world also do. It’s for the well-being of both sides of that wall, you know? An end to the violence. That’s it. An end to the violence for everyone’s peace and security. Just… humanity.

Ending on the subject of Jenna Ortega, who was announced to have left the movie soon after Barrera’s firing, the actress added:

Listen, Jenna is a good egg. She’s a good person and we love each other. She would show up for me and I would show up for her no matter what.

Related We Don’t Need Another Scream Movie The fate of Scream 7 is up in the air, but let’s face it: the franchise is running out of gas. Perhaps now is the time for a break.

Can Neve Campbell Save Scream 7?

Paramount Pictures

Many issues have plagued the early development of Scream VII, as along with losing stars Barrera and Ortega, the film also saw director Christopher Landon exit the production. Scream franchise mainstay Neve Campbell recently broke her silence on where the series stands and a possible return. During an appearance at the BAFTA tea event, via Variety, Campbell addressed returning as Sidney Prescott in the seventh film after sitting the sixth movie out due to not being offered proper compensation that represented her value to the franchise.

The actress said she could see herself coming back “under the right circumstances” and she also hopes that the films will carry one despite the current behind-the-scenes issues:

“These movies mean a lot to us and they mean a lot to the fans. I go to these conventions sometimes and I meet the fans and they’re frantic about these films. They love them. These means mean a lot to them and these characters mean a lot to them. So even for their sake, I would love to see it continue.”

The two most recent installments of Scream are currently streaming on Paramount+.
