Shazam! Fury of the Gods is finally complete. Director David F. Sandberg shared the momentous news on his Twitter account with a shot of Zachary Levi’s titular hero and the words, “Finished! Now for a little time off.”
Like many DCU movies of late, the sequel to 2019 hit Shazam! has been shifted back and forth in Warner Bros. Discovery’s release schedule, moving from an original 2023 release, to December 2022 and finally settling on March 17, 2023. However, Sandberg has previously said that the movie was mostly complete and could have met its December 2022 release date. That would have seen it go head to head with Avatar: The Way of Water, which even for the most sure-footed of releases would be a foolish move, so it will instead release with no direct competition.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Of course, there was a point when it seemed like there was likely to be a role for Black Adam in the Shazam! sequel, that was until Dwayne Johnson made sure that he was given his own solo movie as the anti-hero and that has pushed a meeting between the two characters further down the line. Along with the recently revealed return of Superman, it seems that as unlikely as it seemed just a few months ago, Shazam will likely be a big part of the DCU going forward.

When Will Shazam and Black Adam Meet?
Warner Bros. Pictures
There was originally a plan for Shazam and Black Adam to share the limelight in one movie, with the pair being introduced together. However, it is hard for anyone to say no to Dwayne Johnson, and when The Rock made the case to have his own movie, it very quickly became so. Now with Black Adam having been introduced, and his movie ending with the tease of a future conflict with Henry Cavill’s Superman, fans have been wondering when Shazam will fight Johnson’s would be DCU savior.
While there is currently no timeline of when Black Adam will start taking on some of the DCU’s biggest heroes, it is clear that Warner Bros. Discovery’s newly formed DC Studios will be approaching the next several years of DC movies with an eye on creating a continuous story that has eluded the franchise so far. With Shazam! Fury of the Gods being the next DC movie to be released, it will perhaps give some idea of exactly what could be coming next beyond the releases of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods will star Asher Angel and Zachary Levi as Billy Batson / Shazam!, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Adam Brody as Super Hero Freddy, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Meagan Good as Super Hero Darla, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Ross Butler as Super Hero Eugene, Jovan Armand as Pedro Pena, D.J. Cotrona as Super Hero Pedro, Marta Milans as Rosa Vasquez, and Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez. New cast members also include Rachel Zegler, Helen Mirren, and Lucy Liu as the film’s three main antagonists. The movie will be released worldwide on March 17, 2023.
