Spirit Halloween Movie is Happening with Christopher Lloyd and Rachel Leigh Cook

Halloween fans may be happy to know that a movie about Spirit Halloween, the specialty store that opens during the trick-or-treat season every year to sell costumes and other spooky novelties, is in the works. Variety reports that the popular store has partnered up with Strike Back Studios, Hideout Pictures, and Particular Crowd to develop a family-friendly feature that’s simply called Spirit Halloween. On board to star in the film are Back to the Future favorite Christopher Lloyd and She’s All That star Rachel Leigh Cook.

Also starring in the family adventure film are Donavan Colan (Zoe), Dylan Frankel (Raven’s Home), Jaiden Smith (Blue Bloods), and Marissa Reyes (Raven’s Home), with Marla Gibbs (El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie) set to take the lead. David Poag makes his directorial debut by helming the film using a screenplay by Billie Bates. Strike Back Studios president Noor Ahmed is producing with Shannon Houchins, while Tomás’ Yanelevich, Peter Bevan, Mariana Sanjurjo, and Clay Epstein are executive producing. MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“When a new Spirit Halloween store appears in a deserted strip mall, three middle-school friends who think they’ve outgrown trick-or-treating make a dare to spend the night locked inside the store Halloween night. But they soon find out that the store is haunted by an angry evil spirit who has possessed the creepy animatronic characters. The kids embark on a thrilling and spooky adventure in order to survive the night and avoid becoming possessed themselves.”

“One of the reasons I immediately connected with the script is it is very much inspired by some of my favorite kid adventure films growing up from The Goonies, Gremlins, Monster Squad and so many great films made by Amblin Entertainment,” Ahmed said in a statement.

Spirit Halloween Isn’t The Only Store to Get an Adaptation

If you can believe it, there’s another famous store that will get a live-action adaptation, but this one is for the small screen. Netflix has put together an upcoming sitcom set in the last Blockbuster store that’s open in the United States. Randall Park and Melissa Fumero lead the series with the cast also starring Tyler Alvarez, Madeleine Arthur, Olga Merediz, JB Smoove, and Kamaia Fairburn.

What’s different about The Last Blockbuster is that Blockbuster Video stores are more so seen as nostalgic, reminding people of a simpler time before streaming services when we all had to go to brick-and-mortar locations and shell out several bucks each to watch movies. Spirit Halloween, meanwhile, is a store that continues to be celebrated when it opens its doors every year. It’s a particular favorite place to visit for horror fans in addition to people of all ages who just love the Halloween holiday.

Spirit Halloween has recently wrapped filming, and the reported plan is to get the film in front of audiences later in 2022, presumably in time for the Halloween holiday season. Blockbuster does not yet have a release date and is currently in production.
