Critics are unanimous in their praise for The Banshees of Inisherin. Debuting in movie theaters this weekend, the movie, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, has debuted with a perfect 100% score at Rotten Tomatoes. This is based on more than 100 reviews from critics, each one having high praise for the feature film from writer-director Martin McDonagh.
“The Banshees of Inisherin is a straight-up masterpiece, and one that offers a striking moral for the fake news era and beyond,” Eddie Harrison of Film-Authority.com said in his review.
Jeffrey Harris of 411mania says, “The Banshees of Inisherin is a fascinating look at the deterioration of a friendship and depression through the backdrop of a coastal Irish island. Farrell and Gleeson deliver quietly powerful, emotional performances.”
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
The movie reunites McDonagh with Farrell and Gleeson; the three had previously worked together on the film In Bruges. Louisa Moore of Screen Zealots says that this new movie is proof that the three need to continue collaborating as magic is always made whenever it happens.
“McDonagh, Farrell, and Gleeson should continue to make movies together because something magical happens when they do,” she says. “Backed by strong performances and a superbly written script, this is an outstanding piece of accomplished filmmaking.”
And our own Julian Roman had praise for the film, noting in his review, “The Banshees of Inisherin tells a bleak and often humorous tale of sad endings. The riveting devolvement of deeply personal relationships strikes a sobering tone. The hurt and loss that one feels often means freedom for another.”

Career-Best Performances for Colin Farrell
Searchlight Pictures
In the early reviews, Farrell and Gleeson have particularly drawn immense acclaim with some critics suggesting they should be up for Academy Award nominations. It even garnered an impressive 13-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. Some are even saying this is the very best acting we’ve seen yet from both film vets.
“Ignited by career-best performances from Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleason, this new classic from son of Ireland Martin McDonagh brims over with dark comic magic and jolts of bloody scary hell. Fasten your seatbelts for one of the best movies of the year,” writes Peter Travers of ABC News.
Set in a small town during the Irish Civil Ware, The Banshees of Inisherin follows Farrell and Gleeson as two longtime friends who suddenly become separated when one decides to abruptly end the friendship without an explanation. This leads to ensuing conflict with unexpected consequences for both men. The official synopsis for The Banshees of Inisherin is as follows:
Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN follows lifelong friends Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship.
