Two new The Batman tie-in toys tease a new secret identity for Bruce Wayne known as The Drifter. McFarlane Toys has added the pair of playthings to their DC Multiverse line, (which you can purchase courtesy of Entertainment Earth) with the descriptions alongside the figures offering several clues regarding this new persona, which will be used by Bruce Wayne to move around Gotham City without being noticed. Something which can be difficult when you walk around looking like either the richest man in the world or a giant bat.
The official descriptions presented alongside the toys read; “In the guise of The Drifter, Bruce Wayne is able to infiltrate the crowds of Gotham City at ground-level without revealing his true identity,” and “When traversing the streets of Gotham as The Drifter, Bruce Wayne uses The Drifter Bike: a modified Cafe racer for optimum speed with minimal flare.” The Drifter has been glimpsed in some of the footage released across various trailers, with this newest secret identity further demonstrating how little Bruce Wayne will be living a normal life in The Batman, instead dedicating all of his time to fighting crime.

While the comics have often had Bruce Wayne don different disguises outside of Batman, this will be the first time that a big-screen adaptation has really committed to this idea. The addition of The Drifter is just one of the changes that director Matt Reeves is making for his iteration of The Dark Knight, with the filmmaker also intent on making The Batmobile pretty terrifying in its own right thanks to some surprising inspiration. “It has to make an appearance out of the shadows to intimidate, so I thought of it almost like Stephen King’s Christine,” Reeves explained recently. “I liked the idea of the car itself as a horror figure, making an animalistic appearance to really scare the hell out of the people Batman’s pursuing.”

A new, rather lengthy synopsis has teased the plot of The Batman, adding some much-needed detail to Bruce Wayne’s latest outing. “Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”
The Batman is scheduled for release in the United States on March 4, 2022.
