Liam Gallagher says Noel is “still playing hard to get”

Liam Gallagher dedicated a song to Noel at his ‘Definitely Maybe’ show in Cardiff last night (June 3), and told the crowd that his brother was “still playing hard to get” regarding an Oasis reunion.

The singer is currently out on a special UK and Ireland tour to mark the 30th anniversary of Oasis’ 1994 debut album. He is playing the record in full at the gigs and airing numerous other tracks from that era.

To introduce his rendition of ‘Whatever’ B-side ‘Half The World Away’ – which was originally sung by Noel – Liam told the audience: “So I’m gonna dedicate this next tune to my little brother, who’s still playing hard to get.”

He continued: “But that’s alright. Word on the street is he was spotted in a really posh chocolate shop – one of them Thorntons – buying some chocolates. So you never know! D’you know what I mean?”

Earlier this year, LG suggested that Noel should “send him a box of chocolates” as an apology for being “really mean” to him around the time of Oasis’ break-up in 2009.

“He knows I’m not going to call him,” Liam explained at the time. “He’s the one who split the band up, so he’ll be doing the calling, and if there is no calling we won’t be getting back together.”

In 2023, Noel said he would consider reuniting with Oasis if Liam called him but claimed that his brother was too much of a “coward” to follow through with the idea.

This April, Liam responded to Andy Bell’s comments about a potential Oasis return. Bell, who played bass for the band between 1999 and 2009, said Oasis would “probably” get back together at some point in the future.

Liam then said that Bell “should really not be getting people’s hopes up”, adding: “It’s not big and it’s not clever.” He also replied to a fan who argued that the Ride musician was “just saying what you’ve said a million times already” – referring to Liam’s many past comments about Oasis’ future.

The singer replied: “I’ve never mentioned [an] Oasis reunion it’s over we must all really move [on] for our own mental health.”

Re-posting Liam’s message, Bell said: “Apologies! Didn’t mean to get anyone’s hopes up, nothing to see here! X.”

Last October, Liam claimed that Noel had been asked to participate in his ‘Definitely Maybe’ UK and Ireland tour, but he “refused”.

Speaking to NME in 2020, Liam said an Oasis reunion was “gonna happen very fucking soon”, with Noel revealing in early 2023 that he would “never say never” to the idea. LG subsequently argued that his older brother had “done a lot of damage to Oasis as a brand”.

Noel then discussed the possibility of an Oasis comeback during an interview with NME last summer. He said he would “inevitably” be approached about a tour, but added: “There’s never really been a serious offer about ‘The Big O’ getting back together, but there you go.”

In October, the High Flying Birds frontman accused Liam of trying to “rewrite history” regarding Oasis’ “dreadful” final year together. “The last tour was not happy,” he explained.

Former Oasis guitarist Bonehead has said that he would like a reunion to go ahead because of what it would mean to the “younger fans” of the band.

More recently, Noel revealed that he would be “bang up” for an Oasis hologram show after watching ABBA‘s ‘Voyage’ concert.

During an interview with NME in April, Liam said an Oasis return was “not happening” around the ‘Definitely Maybe’ anniversary. He was asked if fans could expect a reunion to celebrate the three-decade milestone of ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory’ in 2025.

“I don’t know – I don’t think that’s happening either,” he responded. ‘It’s not happening at this moment in time.”

Oasis have since announced a 30th anniversary reissue of ‘Definitely Maybe’, featuring previously unheard recordings and outtakes.

Liam’s current tour has also seen the former frontman cover Noel‘s Oasis-era ‘Lock All The Doors’ demo, which the latter had reworked as a High Flying Birds track.
