When Stranger Things premiered on Netflix in 2016, it brought new meaning to the word “popular,” not only spawning a new franchise but also proving the success of the both the streamer and streaming in general. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, in 1980, the series begins when a group of kids take matters into their own hands and search for answers after one of their friends goes missing. Who could ever have predicted the extraordinary and often horrifying places their journey would take them? Now, almost ten years later, viewers are saying goodbye to the main series and the characters they’ve grown to love. But it’s not really over, with the animated Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 set to continue the adventure.
As the original show gears up for its fifth and final season, which will be released in three stages, the streaming service recently unveiled the upcoming animated series at the Annecy Animation Festival in France on June 11, 2025. According to Collider, only a limited amount of footage was shown, about two minutes, as well as a pre-recorded message from the Duffer Brothers, who did not spill any additional information. The presentation mostly served as a teaser for what viewers will get to see in the future.

It’s enough to bring a tear to your eye.
A logline for the series has also been revealed and reads, “Welcome back to Hawkins in the stark winter of 1985, where the original characters must fight new monsters and unravel a paranormal mystery terrorizing their town in Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, an epic new animated series.” If this sounds like a cartoon you’d watch on a Saturday, that was the inspiration for the Duffer Brothers who grew up watching cartoons on the weekend. According to Collider, the brothers are hoping this animated series feels like one of the classic ’80s cartoons, such as Beetlejuice and the Ghostbusters show The Real Ghostbusters, which they included clips of in their video. However, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 features CG animation and the characters have a more realistic look.
‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Has Been a Long Time Coming
Netflix
Based on the logline, we now know that the series will take place in the winter of 1985 between seasons two and three, but no information about how many episodes its debut season will have was revealed. Some fan-favorite characters were spotted in the footage, including Mike Wheeler, Will Byers, Eleven, Dustin Henderson, Lucas Sinclair, Max Mayfield, and Jim Hopper. While that’s exciting, don’t get your hopes up too much about whether the original cast will voice their characters, as Netflix hasn’t revealed who will bring them to life. Some scenes in the footage included at a lab in their school, while riding their bikes, at Hopper’s house, and outside Hawkins National Laboratory. There will be new monsters, new mysteries and a new character named Nikki Baxter who has short pinkish hair. Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 will premiere in 2026.
Stranger Things fans have waited patiently and impatiently for the last season. Now, it’s almost time to get swept back into the town of Hawkins for one last ride. As previously mentioned, the last season will be released in three stages: four episodes on November 26, three episodes on Christmas Day, and one on New Year’s Eve.
