  • House of the Dragon: New Details Revealed About Co-Showrunner Miguel Sapochnik’s Exit

Miguel Sapochnik reportedly had disagreements with the House of the Dragon team on how getting his wife more involved behind the scenes.

New details have been reported about the sudden exit of Miguel Sapochnik from House of the Dragon. Back in August following the show’s premiere on HBO, it was announced that Sapochnik was leaving the show, while he’d remain on board as an executive producer. He had been serving as co-showrunner alongside Ryan Condal. At the time, it wasn’t entirely clear why Sapochnik made the decision, but he suggested that it wasn’t easy.

“I am so proud of what we accomplished with season 1 and overjoyed by the enthusiastic reaction of our viewers,” Sapochnik said in a statement at the time. “It was incredibly tough to decide to move on, but I know that it is the right choice for me, personally and professionally.”

He added, “I am so glad to remain a part of the HBO and House of the Dragon family and, of course, I wish Ryan and his team success and all the best with season 2 and beyond.”

Now, an update has come in on Sapochnik’s exit, reportedly revealing new details on what happened. According to a new report from Puck, problems arose when Sapochnik and the cabler disagreed over how to use his wife, Alexis Raben. In addition to Raben appearing in multiple episodes in the role of Talya, she also served as a producer on season 1 of House of the Dragon. Sapochnik is said to have asked for Raben to return to the producing team for season 2, at which point HBO reportedly refused due to her inexperience.

The report also notes that the argument had gotten so heated that a mediator needed to be brought in with the hopes of de-escalating the situation. Ultimately, Sapochnik chose to walk away, losing the motivation to continue working on the series in light of these problems. The former co-showrunner then not only made his exit from House of the Dragon, but is said to have fired his WME agents as well so he could join Raben’s agency, CAA.

Ryan Condal previously spoke about how Sapochnik left the series, suggesting that the Game of Thrones alum was apprehensive about joining the prequel in the first place. As someone who’s already done so much in the Game of Thrones world, Condal says he always had a feeling from the start that Sapochnik’s time working on the series would be limited.

“He doesn’t have anything left to prove in Westeros, I don’t think,” Condal told Variety. “He’s shot every kind of battle: good and evil, light and dark, fantasy and not fantasy, dragon and no dragon. He’s said what he has to say in Westeros. I knew that it was always a possibility that he was going to do one season, get this thing on its feet [and] be proud of having a hand in the actual creation of a Game of Thrones story… I was really bummed. He’s tremendously talented. And I’m really proud of the work that we did.”

On moving on without his creative partner, Condal added, “Thankfully, I have a wonderful team around me. I’m excited for the story that we’re going to tell in Season 2. There are thousands of people that go into the making of this. It’s on me to be a great leader and try to inspire people, hopefully with some good writing, to get the very best work out of them and make another great season of the show.”

House of the Dragon doesn’t yet have a premiere date set for season 2, but you can stream the first season in its entirety on HBO Max.
