Jason Voorhees is immortal, so it’s only right that his story lives on through the Friday the 13th franchise, which includes classic films, television shows, fan-made graphics, and more. Horror lovers got their first dose of the fictional icon in 1980, and not during Halloween season. The film was released in May and turned the month of warm weather and outside festivities into bloody screams and a fear of visiting lakes with a group of people (teenagers, mostly). It wasn’t just any lake that Jason marked as his territory; it was Crystal Lake, which became the latest name for Peacock and A24’s Friday the 13th series. Creator, writer, and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane has been providing updates on his Instagram about the new show, and recently revealed where it stands.
In a recent Instagram post, Kane shared a picture of a production slate, also known as a clapperboard, with the caption, “Production Day 1. It’s real, folks. #crystallake #codenamemamasboy #kikikimamama” which was enough to get fans of the horror franchise hyped for what’s to come. One supporter, linkin646, wrote, “Glad we can finally get new Friday the 13th content.” The Jason Voorhees drought was one of the longest for a franchise this legendary, with the latest production released in 2009. Peacock and A24’s Crystal Lake series is officially gearing up to end that drought with a star-studded cast.

Finally, the iconic horror franchise slashes its way out of development hell and onto the small screen.
According to Deadline, William Catlett (Black Lightning, Forever) joined the cast in May and will play a character named Levon Brooks. Details about the role and the plot of the series remain hidden, but it’s a major part opposite of Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks, ER), who will portray Pamela Voorhees, the mother of Jason. Deadline also reported that the series rounded out its series regular cast in early June, adding Devin Kessler (Godfather of Harlem), Cameron Scoggins (Shades of Blue, Nashville), and Gwendolyn Sundstrom. Kessler will play Briana Brooks, while Scoggins will play Dorf, and Sundstrom will play Grace.
Friday the 13th (1980) kicked off a legendary horror franchise that, years later, saw Jason in Manhattan, in space, and even in a battle with fellow gore lover Freddy Krueger. The plot follows a group of teenage camp counselors who are murdered by an unknown killer while they are attempting to reopen an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past. Pamela Voorhees’s son, Jason, drowned while unsupervised, and she blamed the camp counselors, becoming a serial killer to get revenge. In Friday the 13th Part 2, Jason Voorhees makes his debut, killing and seeking revenge for the death of his mother.
‘Crystal Lake’ Is the Second ‘Friday the 13th’ Series in the Franchise
Paramount Pictures
Although no details have been shared about the premise of Crystal Lake, fans expect Jason Voorhees to be related in some way, since his legendary mask wasn’t in the 1987 series Friday the 13th: The Series. The television series focused on two cousins’ attempts to recover cursed antiques that were sold from a shop they inherited from their uncle, and it starred John D. LeMay as Ryan Dallion and Louise Robey as Michelle Foster. Creators Frank Mancuso Jr. and Larry B. Williams originally named it The 13th Hour but knew if the name tied into the movies, they would have a better chance of selling it to networks.
