  • You: Penn Badgley Requested to Remove Intimacy Scenes Moving Forward In the Hit Netflix Series

Moving forward, it looks like viewers will be seeing fewer racy moments from You’s brilliant and infatuated charmer, Joe Goldberg.

Netflix

Since 2018, the book-to-series adaptation You has captivated audiences largely in part to the series’ leading man, Joe Goldberg. Actor Penn Badgley portrays a brilliantly lovestruck young man whose extremely obsessive tendencies land him in deadly situations. Long-time viewers of You know that Joe has not had a shortage of partners or coitus on the show. But, contrary to his character Joe, Badgley doesn’t share the enthusiasm for the on-camera sex scenes. He recently disclosed that he asked You’s creator, Sera Gamble, to ixnay the sex scenes moving forward during an episode of his Podcrushed podcast.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“I asked Sera Gamble can I just do no more intimacy scenes,” he mentioned to his co-host Nava Kavelin on Thursday. “This is actually a decision I made before I took the show. I don’t think I have ever mentioned it publicly. One of the main things was, do I want to put myself back on a career path where I’m always playing the romantic lead?”

Considering how sex is embedded within the framework of You through Joe’s series of partners, the deviation away from sexual intimacy could alter the show’s structure. But as it would turn out, Gamble was on board to move away from the racy on-screen moments, respecting the wishes of Badgley.

“Fidelity in every relationship, including my marriage, is important to me. It’s got to the point where I don’t want to do that. So I said to Sera, ‘my desire would be zero, to go from 100 to zero.’ But I signed this contract. I signed up for this show. I know what I did. You can’t take this aspect out of the DNA of the concept. So how much less can you make it, was my question to them. She didn’t even bat an eye. She was really glad that I was that honest. She was sort of almost, I want to say empowered, it had a really positive response. They came back with a phenomenal reduction.”

Why You Season 4 Is a Whodunit Mystery

Netflix

You returned for its fourth season Thursday, Feb. 9, and audiences finally get the chance to reunite with their favorite love-obsessed killer, Joe, across the pond as a university teacher in London. However, unlike previous seasons, Joe turns from predator to prey as the mysterious and formidable Eat the Rich killer develops an obsession with him. In season 4, the reformed serial killer must now play detective to solve the mystery of London’s new murderer. Showrunner and executive producer Sera Gamble credits fellow EP Greg Berlanti with the idea to make season 4 a whodunit mystery. She spoke on the inspiration and how it fits within the overall skeleton of You’s fourth season in an interview with Tudum.

“It’s fun to put someone who knows literary tropes into one of the tropiest stories possible, and it fits nicely with the idea that he’s genuinely going to be different now. He’s done murdering, he’s learned from his mistakes and he’s going to do what it takes to right the karmic scales. That doesn’t just mean grow a beard and teach about American literature, it also means maybe that you have to try to protect the very people [whose fate] previously would’ve had you at least look the other way, if not actively participate in what was going on with them.”

The first half of You season 4 is currently available for streaming exclusively through Netflix. The second half will debut on Mar. 9.
