After two long years, Apple TV’s hit comedy Platonic has finally returned to the small screen, and it’s brought with it an early Rotten Tomatoes score that signals Season 2 is even better than the first go around. Premiering back in May 2023, Platonic stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, and was created by Francesca Delbanco and Nicholas Stoller, the same duo that brought fans the Netflix series Friends from College.
Hitting Rotten Tomatoes with a perfect 100% rating from critics, the first two episodes of Platonic Season 2 debut today, Aug, 6, with the remaining eight airing weekly until its conclusion on Oct. 1. Richard Roeper from RogerEbert.com calls it a “sweet and light” series that makes “the perfect late summer viewing,” while Katie Doll from CRB echoes those sentiments to add:
“Platonic is candidly harmless in the way that viewers can either fully invest in it or put it on in the background while doing laundry and feel satisfied either way.”
Also starring Luke Macfarlane, Kyle Mooney, and Beck Bennett, Platonic explores the friendship between Sylvia (Byrne) and Will (Rogen) as they navigate the trials of mid-life chaos while resisting any romantic feelings they might have for one another. Following the events of Season 1, which saw Will get engaged and Sylvia become an event planner, Season 2 picks back up with them trying to maintain their boundaries while supporting each other through new hurdles. Weddings, career changes, relationship tensions, and, of course, life in general are just some of the obstacles they face, but will they get through it all together and remain platonic, or will they cave in to the obvious feelings they have for one another?
‘Platonic’ Is One of Those Shows That “Could Run for Years”
With the first season holding a Certified Fresh rating of 93%, Season 2 is already shaping up to be even better than the freshman outing, which spells good news for fans that have been waiting forever for the series to return. Critic Andrew Murray notes that “Stoller and Delbanco have refined the show’s formula for this newest installment, offering a coming-of-age-style story that’s as thoughtful as it is outrageously fun.” Nick Schager from The Daily Beast was another who had high praise for Platonic, and, more specifically, the chemistry between Rogen and Byrne:
“Rogen and Byrne are so ideally well-paired—his ragamuffin slacker wiseassery meshing perfectly with her frazzled put-together anxiety and wannabe-cool awkwardness—that they make it TV’s most steadfast laugh-out-loud affair.”
Critic Nicholas Quah added their approval to the mix, writing that Platonic “walks a fine line between depth and lightness, substance and ease, and feels like a show that could run for years.” He’s not wrong there, as we could easily see the Apple TV+ hit lasting for a good while, similar to the way Grace and Frankie on Netflix lasted for seven seasons. The trick will be being able to sustain the romantic tension between Rogen and Byrne without actually pairing them up. At least, not for another couple of seasons, anyway.
