Plot, Cast, and Everything Else We Know

If you were a kid growing up in the early 2000s, you might remember the iconic animated series Clone High. Running on MTV in the US and Teletoon in Canada, the series took iconic historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Joan of Arc, Cleopatra, and Mahatma Gandhi into a modern high school setting. Despite only running for a single season of 13 episodes between 2002 and 2003, the series attracted a strong cult following among fans that has persisted even 20 years later.

In July 2020, it was announced that MTV had ordered a revival of the series with original creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller returning. The series was later moved to HBO Max and given a two-season order. Will it be possible for this revival to capture lightning in a bottle just as the original did two decades ago?

Keeping that in mind, let’s take a look at everything we know about the upcoming revival of Clone High. Will the original voice cast return to reprise their roles, and will we be seeing any new faces join them? Will it continue the plot of the original or introduce a new concept? When should audiences expect the revival to be released? And what else should we know about the new Clone High?

Plot: What We Know

MTV

Few details have been released about the specific plot of the revival, but it has been described as a “modern refresh” of the original series. That suggests that the new episodes will try to remain as faithful to the plot of the original series as possible. In the original, the United States military cloned various historical figures with the intention of harvesting their specific abilities for use in military projects. They set up a secret military experiment disguised as a high school to monitor the clones’ activities.

During their time at the military high school, the clones also faced typical elements of high school, such as dating and relationships, parties, proms, and athletics. Outside of the central characters, the school was populated by various other historical clones, such as Vincent van Gogh, Martin Luther King Jr, George Washington Carver, Paul Revere, Julius Caesar, and many more.

It is likely that the characters will remain the same age in the revival, as most animated series do not age their main characters. Look at the 2011 revival of Beavis and Butt-head. Despite being off the air for nearly 15 years, the titular characters had not aged. Since the concept of “high school” is in the show’s name, it would not make sense for the characters to be older. Phil Lord and Chris Miller have described the revival as really a “season two” of the original series, which confirms the same characters will be back at the same age. In all likelihood, their high school struggles will be adapted for a more modern audience.

The original series was not without its controversy. In 2003, lawmakers and activists in India launched a hunger strike in protest over the series’ depiction of Gandhi, who was portrayed as a wild party animal. MTV was quick to issue an apology for the backlash, stating that the series was never meant to air in India and apologizing for offending “the people of India and the memory of Mahatma Gandhi.”

Cast: What We Know

While the casting of the revival has remained relatively quiet, Lord and Miller have revealed some important details. In an interview with Collider, Lord confirmed that he would be reprising his role as Cinnamon J. Scudworth, the principal for Clone High who wants to undermine the United States military and use the clones for his own purposes. Miller is also expected to reprise his roles as JFK and Mr. Butlertron, the robotic assistant to Principal Scudworth, from the original.

The voice cast of the original was led by Will Forte as Abraham Lincoln, Nicole Sullivan as Joan of Arc, Michael McDonald as Mahatma Gandhi, and Christa Miller as Cleopatra. While none of these names have been confirmed to be reprising their roles, Lord and Miller did reveal that the episodes are in production. If there have been any cast changes, we could reasonably expect to hear about them in the coming weeks and months.

Release Date: What We Know

MTV

As Lord and Miller mentioned in the Collider interview, the series is currently in production for HBO Max, with both seasons of the order being produced at the same time. However, there is no set release date for the new season. When Lord was asked when viewers might see the new batch of episodes, he responded, “That’s a thing that actually I don’t know.” Miller added to that by saying, “I know that some of the episodes are in animation right now. But I don’t know when it will actually be on the air.”

Given the timeframe of animation, it would likely be reasonable to expect the episodes sometime in late 2022 or early 2023. That would also allow the premiere to roughly line up with the 20th anniversary of the debut of the original series. In any case, all that viewers can do now is wait and see.
