Sies Marjan’s Sander Lak Is Returning to the NYFW Schedule

On September 11, former Sies Marjan designer Sander Lak will make his return to New York Fashion Week with Sanderlak, the luxury genderless ready-to-wear label he launched last year. The on-model presentation will take place in the evening at the brand’s Chinatown pop-up space (2 East Broadway) alongside a yet-to-be-revealed “interactive element.” Mysterious!

The Dutch designer began developing Sanderlak with the help of angel investors following the shutdown of Sies Marjan during the pandemic and is excited to be showing in New York again. Although he has also held showroom appointments in Paris, he considers New York the brand’s home base.

“Even though the concept of Sanderlak is somewhat nomadic, with each year built around the colors and textures of a different location, it felt important to celebrate that,” he tells WWD. “New York has offered me so much, and I am so grateful for the platform and community it has given me.”

The NYFW event will also offer a look back at Sanderlak’s earlier collections, giving editors and buyers a chance to see how the label has developed since its launch.

Lak, who previously worked at Dries Van Noten, has been busy building a presence in New York beyond Fashion Week. He recently brought Sanderlak to Montauk and held another pop-up in Sag Harbor. His Chinatown location, which originally opened in May for just a month, has since had its lease extended, with Lak hoping to eventually make the space permanent.

For Lak, the return to New York is as much about establishing Sanderlak as it is about revisiting a city that played an important role in his career.

As for whether the brand will become a regular fixture on the NYFW calendar, Lak is keeping expectations measured. “I’ll always try to participate in some way,” he says. “I’m sure that, in the future, another fashion show will happen, but I’m taking my time. Small steps. There is a lifetime of milestones to reach and dream about.”
