Houston Astros right-hander Luis Garcia will undergo Tommy John surgery, the team announced Friday.
No date has been set for the procedure. Garcia, 26, was placed on the injured list with right elbow discomfort on May 2.
He will miss the entirety of the 2023 season and is expected to return sometime during the 2024 campaign.
The righty was only able to throw eight pitches against the San Francisco Giants on Monday before leaving with a trainer. He was promptly sent for an MRI.
Garcia has been a crucial member of the Astros’ rotation since finishing as runner-up for AL Rookie of the Year in 2021. He authored a 4.00 ERA and 3.73 FIP over 27 innings this year, making six starts.
Entering the 2023 campaign, he had thrown at least 150 innings in back-to-back years and owned a 3.57 ERA and 3.80 FIP over 57 starts and six relief appearances.
The reigning World Series champs are also missing Lance McCullers Jr. and Jose Urquidy in the rotation. Houston must rely on Framber Valdez, Cristian Javier, and rookie Hunter Brown.
