Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham has high hopes for one of his team’s best young players.
Appearing on the “#thisleague UNCUT” podcast with Marc Stein and Chris Haynes, Ham declared Lakers guard Austin Reaves a future All-Star.
“I’m putting it on record right now: Austin Reaves will be an All-Star at some point soon,” Ham said. “Everything you saw him do last year, the kid is a flat-out competitor, one of the greatest human beings you could ever be around. Always fun, keeps things simple but yet works at his craft, is fearless in the biggest moments.”
The Lakers recently re-signed Reaves to a four-year deal worth $56 million. The undrafted guard worked his way into a starting role last season, his second in the league.
Reaves, 25, averaged 17.6 points and 5.5 assists after the All-Star break. He carried that play over to the postseason, where he was the Lakers’ third-leading scorer behind only LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
“I think there’s a lot more levels he’s going to get to before it’s all said and done,” Ham said. “He’ll be an All-Star and a world champion with me in the room with him.”
In addition to re-signing Reaves, the Lakers brought back starting point guard D’Angelo Russell and forward Rui Hachimura this offseason. They also added guard Gabe Vincent as a free agent.
