The Miami Marlins placed reigning NL Cy Young Sandy Alcantara on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm flexor strain, the club announced Wednesday.
Alcantara was dealing with arm discomfort following his start Sunday in Washington, sources told SportsGrid’s Craig Mish.
“I think anytime you lose your ace, the timing is going to be difficult,” Marlins general manager Kim Ng said, according to MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola. “It’s obviously tough on him. We know what an ultra competitor and warrior he is. So, it’s like I said, the timing is never good.”
The 27-year-old has struggled to replicate his masterful 2022 performance so far this season. Alcantara owns a 7-12 record with a 4.14 ERA and 151 strikeouts across 184 2/3 innings in 2023.

Miami’s offense was also dealt a blow as the club placed slugger Jorge Soler on the injured list with a right oblique strain. Soler leads the Marlins with 35 home runs and 71 RBIs over 126 games this season.
The Marlins recalled outfielder Dane Myers, right-hander Edward Cabrera, and left-handed Devin Smeltzer from Triple-A Jacksonville in corresponding moves.
Miami is firmly in the mix for a wild-card spot. The club trails the Cincinnati Reds by just a half-game entering play Wednesday.
