‘Squid Game’ Season 3 Is Necessary After That Season 2 Finale Cliffhanger

Warning: Spoilers for Squid Game.

Just as disturbing and shocking as its first season, Netflix’s massive hit series, Squid Game, has finally returned for another season, and audiences are hooked once again. The show’s second season takes place two years after Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) won the big cash prize, which he’s used to bankroll his efforts to find those responsible for the horrifically violent games. Now, with more money than he could ever ask for, Gi-hun wants nothing more than to put an end to the games once and for all. Unfortunately, when his plan doesn’t unfold like he anticipated, he finds himself fighting to survive the deadly games once more.

As Gi-hun works his way through the first few games, he quickly realizes he won’t be able to rely on what he experienced the first time around to save himself or others. Red-Light Green-Light might have been the same, but the other games certainly are not. Meanwhile, Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) and Woo-seok (Seok-ho Jeon) are busy on the outside working to find the island Gi-hun remains trapped on. However, after the GPS tracker is removed from Gi-hun’s tooth, his friends are essentially searching for a needle in a haystack. Nonetheless, they soldier on and begin to close in on the secret island.

With only seven episodes in the latest season, Squid Games had a lot of ground to cover in a shorter amount of time. As such, its finale didn’t provide viewers with the same kind of closure its first season offered. Because of this, there’s no question that a third season is necessary following that cliffhanger of a finale.

Much like the first season, Player 001 isn’t who they say they are. However, unlike last time, viewers are aware of it from the beginning. The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), Jun-ho’s brother and the same person Gi-hun is looking to eliminate, assumes the role of Player 001 under the guise of Oh Young-il and subsequently embeds himself among the other players. He even allies himself with Gi-hun, who has no idea of the man’s true identity. After participating in every game, he aids in the revolt against the soldiers, only to assume his original role as Gi-hun nearly reaches the control room. However, everyone remains in the dark about who Young-il really is and will likely assume he died during their revolt like the others.

While viewers know about the Front Man from the beginning, Sea Captain Park (Oh Dal-su) is another story. He saved Jun-ho from the sea years before and has continued to aid in his search for the island. However, it turns out that Captain Park is attempting to sabotage Jun-ho’s efforts to return to the island and take down those in charge of the games. Unfortunately, the only team member who discovered his trickery was stabbed and tossed overboard. That being said, it would appear no one is who they seem to be this season. Given the rampant deceit throughout Season 2, all of which has already led to dire results for Gi-hun and Jun-ho, the show’s third season will likely pull back the curtains and reveal the truth.

‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Left Viewers With More Questions

A Third Season is Necessary If Viewers Want Answers

Needless to say, audiences have a ton of questions after that insane finale. Given that Gi-hun didn’t die as a result of the revolt, it’s highly unlikely he’ll perish at the start of Season 3, which begs the question as to how that will ultimately play out. Do he and the other players simply continue playing the games after that massacre? Such a scenario is likely. Or does something new enter the fray that viewers have never seen before? There was a small hint as to what’s coming in Squid Game Season 3 following the credits, but what exactly does that mean? The players have already participated in a round of Red-Light Green-Light, so what exactly is that new creepy giant robot doll?

This Action-Thriller on Hulu Is a Decent ‘Squid Game’ Replacement After Season 2

Fans who like the thrilling action of Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ need to check out this series based on a popular movie franchise, ‘The Purge.’

Furthermore, what’s going to happen to the rest of the players who didn’t participate? Will they be given a chance to vote again about whether to leave or continue playing the games? Also, will the soldiers find out whether Cho Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon) was part of the revolt and kill her? Or will she survive to continue the games? Those inquiries don’t even begin to cover what’s happening beyond the island’s games with Jun-ho and Woo-seok. Will they discover the truth about Captain Park before he kills another member of their team? Why did Captain Park rescue Jun-ho only to double-cross his efforts years later? Clearly, there are numerous questions that require answers.

The show’s first season offered viewers some sort of closure, but the same cannot be said for the show’s second season. In fact, the finale ended on quite a dramatic cliffhanger, and viewers need answers regarding all those looming questions. Without a doubt, fans certainly require a third season following that Season 2 finale, which will thankfully be arriving on Netflix sometime in 2025. All episodes of Squid Game are currently streaming on Netflix.
