‘Superman’ Fans Use Dean Cain’s Own Words Against Him Following “Immigrant” Comments

For those of a certain generation, Dean Cain will always be Superman. Thanks to his role in the beloved ‘90s series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Cain will be forever recognized for sporting the familiar “S” emblem, but the actor seems to have strayed far and away from the ideals of the iconic superhero in real-life. Cain recently faced controversy following his response to Superman director James Gunn’s comments in which he called the Man of Steel an “immigrant.” And, while many fans have since taken to social media to disagree with Cain, it turns out that his own depiction of Superman does it best.

‘Superman’ Is the Game-Changing Superhero Movie the Genre Desperately Needed

‘Superman’ is a sea change for the superhero movie, the same way ‘The Dark Knight’ or ‘The Avengers’ were.

“Dean Cain, Superman has ALWAYS been woke. Who cares about what you have to say?” said one user on X/Twitter, with another adding, “Every time you think Dean Cain can’t cement himself as the worst live action Superman even further, he proves you wrong.” An opinion that’s sure to be contentious. “So Dean Cain never understood the character? Great,” says another Superman fan.

Cain has since taken to social media to reveal, “I have NOT seen the new Superman movie. I want to like it. I will see it this week and post my thoughts-” No doubt that, once he does get around to seeing the DCU reboot and sharing his thoughts, this discourse will kick off all over again.

“I Mean, Superman Is the Story of America”

Warner Bros. Pictures

The responses from Superman fans come following Jame Gunn’s explanation that the character is an immigrant. “I mean, Superman is the story of America,” Gunn said to The Sunday Times. “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”

Offering his own controversial, and seemingly incorrect, take, Dean Cain worried that the new Superman had gone too political or “woke” (not that that word has much meaning anymore). “I was excited for the film. I’m excited to see what it is because James Gunn seems to have a sense of humor and the last iterations of Superman didn’t have much humor, and I love the humor in Superman. So I’m rooting for it to be a success, but I don’t like that last political comment,” the former Superman said to TMZ.

“And I saw Sean Gunn say something about it too, and I know Sean, I like Sean, it’s his brother but I just don’t know that it’s going to be the right. It’s not going to take it like Snow White, but I don’t think its gonna help the numbers. People really need to be educated on this immigration situation because we are the most immigrant friendly country by far on this planet.”

By definition, Kal-El is an immigrant. An illegal alien in the most literal terms. Add that to the fact that Superman has time and again fought for humanity to be kind to each other, and especially the struggling underdog, and Cain sadly does not seem to understand the fundamental principles of either Superman or comic books in general. Something which becomes increasingly embarrassing as fans throw his own spoken words back at him courtesy of his time on Lois & Clark.

Written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet (Twisters, Hollywood) in the iconic role of Superman/Clark Kent alongside Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, Nosferatu) as the villainous Lex Luthor. Superman has soared both on Rotten Tomatoes and at the box office, landing a now “certified fresh” 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as being “verified hot” on the audiences’ Popcornmeter at a hugely impressive 93%.
