Tales From ’85′ spin-off coming to Netflix

The title of Netflix’s Stranger Things animated spin-off series has been revealed.

Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85 is the name of the new show, which will be set in the Stranger Things universe and is currently in the works at Netflix.

The series is being executive-produced by original Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, alongside frequent director Shawn Levy, who also helmed Deadpool & Wolverine. No plot details or voice cast members have been revealed as of yet.

In a statement to Netflix’s Tudum, the Duffers said: “We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realised has been absolutely thrilling.”

Speaking about fellow producer and showrunner Eric Robles’ work on the show, they continued: “We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with –– the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…”

Tales From ‘85 isn’t the first Stranger Things spin-off – prequel stage show The First Shadow, following a young Henry Creel when he first moves to Hawkins, came to London’s West End in 2023, and opened on Broadway this week.

A Netflix executive also recently spoke out about the potential for the streamer to turn its hit shows, including Stranger Things and Bridgerton, into video games.

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is set to arrive on Netflix this year, after shooting wrapped in December 2024 – though in February, the Duffers said that could be “quite the push”, and may not be possible. All of the main cast – including Finn Wolfhard, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown and many more – will return, with The Terminator franchise star Linda Hamilton joining the show in a still-unknown role.

Many of the young cast have been working on other projects since wrapping the show. Wolfhard is about to release his directorial debut, Hell Of A Summer, and shared new single ‘Trailers After Dark’ recently ahead of his forthcoming debut album, ‘Happy Birthday’. Joe Keery, aka. Djo, who plays Steve Harrington in the show, has just released his third album, ‘The Crux’. Charlie Heaton, who plays Jonathan Byers, has joined the cast of Industry season four, and Sadie Sink, who plays Max Mayfield, has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe after being cast alongside Tom Holland in his fourth Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day.

Stranger Things season four part one received a four-star review from NME, with Rhian Daly writing: “While there are some gripes to be had with the penultimate season of the show, it still packs in all the terrifying thrills you’d expect, deftly blending horror and sci-fi to maximum effect while still allowing for some laughs among the bleakness.”
