Remember the Teletubbies? They’re Back… in Streaming Form

Teletubbies originally ran for nine seasons and nearly 500 episodes. It was co-created by Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport and aired its first episode in 1997. After finishing its initial run in 2001, the series had a revival that lasted from 2015 to 2018. For many years, the series has held a firm spot in pop culture history as one of the most recognizable and memorable children’s shows of the past three decades.

The series also was in the headlines in 1999 due to controversy stemming from the inclusion of Tinky Winky, a character alleged by late televangelist Jerry Falwell to be a “gay role model” who promoted homosexuality to children. Falwell claimed that Tinky Winky pushed an agenda with the series because the character was purple, carried a handbag, and had a triangle on his forehead, supposedly representing the gay pride symbol. An official response from the BBC later denied that the character was created with an agenda, referring to Tinky Winky as “simply a sweet, technological baby with a magic bag.”

Consisting of 26 12-minute episodes, the new Teletubbies comes to Netflix on Nov. 14, 2022.
