Happy Endings and The Mindy Project fan favorite Adam Pally credits a twist of fate for helping launch his new comedy mockumentary series Mr. Throwback on Peacock, co-starring NBA Golden State Warriors titan and Olympian Stephen Curry. In a recent MovieWeb interview, Pally said:
“Steph’s amazingly talented wife, Ayesha, had a show on HBO [
About Last Night
], and my wife and I were on it, and so was David Caspe and his wife, Casey Wilson [both of
Happy Endings
], a good friend of mine. Everyone just kind of hit it off in this very playful way, and the next day, their producer called us because I think they knew that we were looking for something to do together again. And they said, ‘
Do you have any ideas for a show?’ And we said, ‘Give us a second.’
”
The next call went to Happy Endings and Champaign ILL writers Matthew and Daniel Libman, whom Pally says are “the two funniest writers in television.” The posse brought the idea for a series to Stephen Curry. It hit. Pally, Caspe, and Curry now share executive producer status in a show that marks Curry’s first scripted television role. Ego Nwodim (Saturday Night Live) and Ayden Mayeri (Jackpot!) also star.
A struggling memorabilia dealer, Danny Grossman, seeks redemption by reconnecting with his childhood friend and NBA legend, Steph Curry. Captured in a mockumentary style, the series follows their comedic and heartfelt journey, exploring themes of friendship and second chances as they navigate their past and present.

Showing a Different Side of Stephen Curry
Mr. Throwback tracks a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer seeking redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate, NBA legend Steph Curry. In a previous announcement, Curry said he was excited to step into the world of scripted comedy, noting: “I’m looking forward to viewers getting to see me play a version of myself no one has ever seen before, and hope they feel connected to the characters and the dilemmas they face throughout the series.”
And what is that version nobody has seen before? “What you will see of Stephen is a really playful, highly functioning, supreme being of an athlete who is probably in the top zillion percent of hand-eye coordination and intellect and is able to pick up on patterns and jokes and set-up within hours,” Pally said. “And truly just a fun person to be around.”

In addition to crediting Curry’s innate comedic timing, Pally was also thrilled to reconnect with Caspe, who created Happy Endings, the famed three-season ABC sitcom with a cult following. The series starred Pally, of course, and Damon Wayans, Jr., Eliza Coupe, Elisha Cuthbert, Zachary Knighton, and Casey Wilson. These days, Pally and Wilson host Happy Endings Podcast, a chat fest with the creators, cast, and writers of the former sitcom.
“We love each other truly,” Pally said of working with Caspe again. “Anytime we get to work with each other, it feels like we are still doing Happy Endings, where we would look around and be like, ‘Can you believe they’re letting us do this?’ We had [that] every day, and maybe that’s the secret sauce. You really have to enjoy the people that you go to work with every day to make something that’s enjoyable.”

Pally Will Star in the Next Kevin Smith Movie
In the meantime, be on the lookout for The 4:30 Movie, directed by the great Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy). Pally co-stars in the comedy alongside Genesis Rodriguez (The Umbrella Academy), Justin Long (Goosebumps), Diedrich Bader (Batman: Caped Crusader), Siena Agudong (TV’s Resident Evil), and other great actors. The film chronicles a group of teens in the 1980s who spend the day theater-hopping. Pally said:
“That was just a dream and a thrill. I mean, you know, as a kid from Jersey, when Kevin Smith calls, you run. And that’s what I did. And I don’t want to spoil too much. I mean, there’s so many funny people in it. But yeah, Kevin’s a hero of mine, and he gave me a little chance to gnaw at the bone, and I took a big chunk out of it.” Stay tuned.
