As fans finally get their first look at Andor
Season 2, the show has already become the best entry in the Star Wars franchise in the eyes of critics. While the story of Cassian Andor is obviously set in the galaxy far, far away, and despite being more grounded than many Star Wars projects is still a sci-fi drama, creator Tony Gilroy
and star Genevieve O’Reilly
reflected on the way one dark aspect of the series is very much a mirror of the real world.
While speaking to MovieWeb’s George Edelman ahead of the Season 2 premiere, Gilroy explained how a version of the Star Wars Empire is, and always has been, alive and well in the world we live in.
Tony Gilroy: “Power always redefines the truth, right? It’s always done that, and in the show, the truth is being warped in service of the destruction of a culture. So, I mean, if you look at the burning of the Reichstag as a way to accelerate the getting rid of communists and Jews in Germany. If you look at the Gulf of Tonkin as the way to get America into Vietnam. Some people think the Lusitania was sunk on purpose to bring American to… I mean, the technology has changed and the tempo has changed. But the perversion of truth by power is as old as old as the campfire.”

While shows like The Mandalorian relit the fuse for many Star Wars fans, with a story of spectacular adventure, wild and in some cases familiar creatures, and plenty of action moments to satisfy the franchise’s core audience, Andor has followed Rogue One in elevating the world of Star Wars to a whole new stratosphere.
Following in the footsteps of Rogue One and the astronomical expectations set by Season 1, there was every chance that Andor Season 2 would stumble at the last hurdle – after all, history has proven that Star Wars projects have a habit of getting some harsh reactions from fans even if initially they seem to be doing well. However, as reviews poured in, it became clear that Andor is an exception to the rule, and Season 2 debuted higher than its predecessor with a 98% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Releasing in blocks of three episodes, Andor Season 2 will play out as four mini-seasons, with a time jump between each week’s release. As a truly unique entry in the Star Wars franchise, it is perhaps not surprising that even the format of Andor is something that no other show has attempted. The destination is already written, but the journey of Cassian Andor’s final run is only just getting started.
