Oh lord, the human race is at it again, this time with a gargantuan number of people making the hashtag #CancelNetflix trend on X after it was revealed that former CEO Reed Hastings donated $7 million of his own money in an effort to see Kamala Harris in the White House come November. The hashtag began to trend earlier this afternoon after a report came out (via MSN) that Hastings donated his own cash to a pro-Harris PAC. Hastings co-founded Netflix in 1997 along with Mark Randolph, and has since stepped aside from his position as CEO, but remains executive chairman.
X users and pro-Trump supporters are up in arms over the reveal, with many sharing screenshots of themselves canceling the streamer over the massive donation. Harris’ presidential campaign managed to bring in a whopping $81 million in its first 24 hours after POTUS Joe Biden decided to exit the current circus, and instead throw his weight behind his VP, who it seems will go toe-to-toe with Republican pick and convicted felon, Donald Trump, at polling stations later this year.
@theEXECUTIONER_ calls on his fellow “patriots” to do the right thing, saying that there’s “plenty of other streaming options available.”
@markgreenpoint says he doesn’t “support companies that support communists.” Who knew red was Harris’ color?
@finn_tabulos says that through all the other calls to boycott Netflix, she managed to stay strong, but this is the last straw!
Finally, there is @D4rkR0b who says…well, we don’t even know what he’s trying to say.
The recent announcement by President Biden to step aside has – of course – drawn a lot of attention to the race for the White House, even more than was on it before when it was just him and Trump. With Harris entering the picture, the “us vs. them” mentality has become even more staggering, with many devolving to racial slurs to get their points across, as was the case when Barack Obama was president. A new wave of hatred targeting Harris, her ethnicity, and her gender, seems to be the go-to response for the MAGA faithful, who are determined to keep their guns, strip women of their autonomy, and not see America descend into a “socialist” country. Oh, and did we mention the transgender community being targeted by their hatred? There’s that, too.
However, when it comes to canceling Netflix, not everything is doom and gloom on social media, as users have also been pointing out the absurdity of it all. For instance, @piyushmittal points out that hey, if you’re going to cancel the streaming service, why not cancel Trump, too? After all, he donated to Harris at one point.
As much as we hate AI, @ProseccoLiquido shared a hilarious picture set at Christmas to show their thoughts on the matter.
Then there’s @AtticsOfUrLife, who says that they opened a second account thanks to Hastings’ donation.
@Decodnlyfe1 says they would gladly renew their Netflix subscription for another eight years if given the option, accompanied by a .gif of Harris laughing.
And finally, there’s @Thepartyflorist, who is quick to point out that the same people who love to cry about cancel culture are the same people crying now to cancel Netflix. How does that Alanis Morissette song go? Isn’t it ironic?

While Netflix might see a number of cancelations over the coming hours and perhaps days, when it boils right down to it, it’s still the number one streaming platform on the planet with more than 277 million subscribers, compared to others such as Apple TV+, which are severely lagging behind. Will this hurt their bottom line? Probably not. Will it get them more subscribers? You bet! Cry all you want, but despite the efforts to boycott the streamer once more, they’re still laughing all the way to the bank.
