Season ten episode twenty-one of The Walking Dead titled “Diverged” begins with Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) walking through the woods. Carol has trouble opening her canteen. Daryl gives her his pocket knife to use. Carol laments they haven’t found any food. Daryl tells her he will continue looking. They come to a fork in the path and go their separate ways. Dog leaves Daryl and follows Carol instead.
Daryl rides his motorcycle as Carol returns to Alexandria. Dog finds a torn scarf, which Carol picks up. She returns to her room and fills a water bowl for Dog. She rubs the furball while lamenting her relationship with Daryl. Carol ventures outside and sees Jerry (Cooper Andrews) working. She’s still holding the scarf. Carol just wants “to fix something.” She begs Jerry to give her something to do. “Food is important,” a hungry Jerry replies. Carol will try “to make some soup.”

Daryl continues on the road until his engine dies. A tube has leaked fluid. He grabs his crossbow and abandons the bike. At her house, Carol inspects the pantry. She uses Daryl’s knife to cut up some meager mushrooms and potatoes. She hears a ruckus in her room. Dog has trashed the place. He knocks over a lamp. Carol notices rat turds and hears it scratching. Dog chases the rodent behind the pantry walls, but ends up knocking over the food. Carol uses the knife to build a mousetrap.
Carol goes outside the walls to find more edibles. As she picks greens, walkers pour out of the woods towards her. “I think I can take care of you by myself,” Carol mutters. She methodically kills every walker in the field. Meanwhile, Daryl finds a couple of cars. He opens the trunks and searches for tubing. He sees another car with a walker stuck inside. He goes underneath to cut out the tubing, but the walker shifts the car, trapping him. Daryl kicks his feet until the walker moves and he’s freed. “Thanks buddy,” Daryl says as he walks away.
Jerry watches as Carol returns with her greens, but covered in blood. Daryl returns to his bike. But he doesn’t have his pocket knife and can’t fix the leak. In Alexandria, Carol uses the knife to splice and fix a solar panel. Jerry offers to help, but Carol completes the job on her own. She returns to the pantry and turns on the lights.
Daryl pushes the bike to railroad tracks. He uses his binoculars and sees walkers in the distance. One of them is wearing military gear. He grabs his crossbow and walks through the walkers. He finds his target in a ravine, but falls down as well. Daryl struggles with the camo walker before killing it. He finds ammo, a multi-tool, and other supplies. He exits the ravine as the other walkers fall in. Daryl gets back to his bike, but sees another camo walker approaching. He kills it and hits the jackpot. The walker has more ammo and MRE packets of food.
Carol returns to the pantry with Dog. She chases the rat around the room, but it again escapes behind the wall. Carol uses the scarf to plug the hole. Dog just watches the calamity. The electricity flickers and then fails. Carol lights a lantern and goes to bed. Dog cuddles up beside her.
That night, Daryl works on the bike using a flashlight. Dog hears the rat and wakes up Carol. She goes into the pantry, sees the wall, and stabs a whole in it with the knife. Carol releases her frustration and knocks down the entire wall in a rage. The next morning, Carol cleans up the mess. Jerry swings by to check on her. He realizes that Carol is distressed. Carol rebuffs him at first, then admits she’s struggling. Jerry gives her a hug. The rat leaves the pantry and runs outside. Carol says the “soup is almost ready.”
Daryl rides back into Alexandria with the supplies. Carol is fixing the wall when he rides up. Dog runs to meet his master. Carol throws away the scarf. She offers to return his knife, but he tells her “to keep it.” Daryl is tired and wants to sleep. Carol smiles and returns to her pantry. The Walking Dead returns next Sunday with the season ten finale on AMC.
