It’s the end of the line for City on a Hill. Per Variety, it has been reported that Showtime is ending the series following the conclusion of its third season in September. There won’t be a fourth season coming, making the series finale that aired on Sept. 25 now serve as the season finale. According to the new report, however, Showtime had made the decision months ago under the watch of former Paramount Premium Group chairman and CEO David Nevins, who has since been succeeded by Chris McCarthy.
A statement concerning the show’s cancelation was released by Showtime, and you can read it below.
“City on a Hill concluded its successful run on Showtime with its Season 3 finale. We have had nothing but the best experience working with Kevin Bacon, Aldis Hodge and the entire cast and crew, led by showrunner Tom Fontana and fellow executive producers including Jennifer Todd and Jorge Zamacona. We offer our sincerest thanks to everyone.”
City on a Hill was created by Chuck Mclean and executive produced by series stars Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge alongside Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Barry Levinson, and showrunner Tom Fontana. Along with Bacon and Hodge, the series also starred Jonathan Tucker, Mark O’Brien, Lauren E. Banks, Amanda Clayton, Jere Shea, Kevin Chapman, and Jill Hennessy.

Kevin Bacon Will Miss Playing Jackie Rohr
Showtime
Kevin Bacon is a veteran of the screen, though he especially loved portraying his character in City on a Hill. Per Next Avenue, the actor previously spoke about how Jackie Rohr is someone with so many layers to him that it was always fun for Bacon as an actor to bring him to life over the three seasons of the show.
“So, exactly what’s great about playing this character is he’s not one thing or another,” Bacon said. “For one thing, he’s a streetwise kid who had a very tough upbringing and came from no money and really rough circumstances, and yet, he made his way through college. He’s, frankly, very well-read, and incredibly verbose and has this crazy knowledge of everything, whether it’s true or not — because he does spout a lot of [bull].”
He added, “But he has definitely read a lot of stuff. One of my favorite parts of the show is that you never see Jackie read a book, and yet, he just seems to be able to quote countless amounts of books.”
Meanwhile, fans can still look forward to seeing Bacon and Hodge in other roles with both appearing in new superhero-based projects. Bacon was just recently seen in the trailer for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which will bring the actor into the MCU. The special is set to hit Disney+ on Nov. 25, 2022. As for Hodge, he can be seen on the big screen in The Rock’s new film Black Adam, and given the film’s financial success, we’ll most likely see more of Hodge in the DCU. Hodge has also just been cast in the titular role for an upcoming Alex Cross series at Prime Video.
