Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for the first episode of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon!
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, starring Norman Reedus, takes viewers on a journey as Daryl navigates the streets of France, far from the familiar American landscapes. His primary mission is to reunite with his former allies, Rick and Michonne, while contending with numerous challenges, including both human adversaries and the ever-present undead threat. While the exact circumstances of Daryl’s arrival in France remain shrouded in mystery, the series premiere reveals that he was captured by a survivor group and transported via a mysterious boat.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Greg Nicotero assured fans that the show will delve deeper into the boat and shed light on what Daryl did during his time aboard. Nicotero also hinted that Daryl’s actions on the boat played a significant role in his journey to France.
“In regards to the destruction on the boat, that is definitely Daryl’s handiwork. And we will discover more at some point because that gives us clues as to how he gets to France. Because all he says in the first episode is it’s a ‘series of bad decisions.'”

The Daryl Dixon Spinoff Redefines the Zombie Apocalypse
AMC
The Daryl Dixon spinoff is on a mission to recapture the foundational essence of The Walking Dead franchise while simultaneously catering to the expectations of its devoted fanbase. Greg Nicotero and creator David Zabel have found inspiration in the earlier seasons of the original series as they work to construct a narrative that harks back to the show’s initial allure. Their collective vision is to transport viewers into a world where the very nature of the undead has evolved.
As Nicotero explains in a recent interview with Collider, this evolution in the undead is a deliberate choice aimed at increasing the stakes and infusing the spinoff with a unique flavor. The decision to introduce variant zombies stems from the desire to shake things up for the characters. Nicotero points to a pivotal moment in the first episode where Daryl encounters the “Burners,” a new variant characterized by acidic blood and skin. This encounter leaves Daryl injured and fundamentally alters the survival dynamics he once understood.
“We really did wanna elevate the walkers and change the stakes, not so much for the makeups or the effects element of it, but for the characters. When Daryl comes in contact with the burners in the first episode, and the zombie grabs him and you see that he physically gets burned, that changes all the rules. Everything that he learned about how to protect himself is now out the window. It’s similar, in my opinion, to when we introduced the Whisperers because then there were elements where you couldn’t tell if they were a zombie, or a person wearing the skin of a dead walker, so it was instantly unsettling. We have a lot of opportunities, so we changed up some of the concepts that we did. We really wanted to pay tribute to the best of both worlds. You can still have some zombies that are a lot more energetic than other zombies typically are. It just changes the rules, which is always fun.”
Daryl Dixon’s journey continues every Sunday night on AMC and is available for streaming on AMC+.
