Fans of HBO Max series Doom Patrol were given a DC FanDome treat today with the announcement that the show will be returning for a fourth season, and the debut of season three’s mid-season trailer. The series, which follows DC’s unlikely group of superheroes, aired its first two season on the DC Universe streaming app before moving exclusively to HBO Max for its third season, where it has joined other DC Universe shows such as Harley Quinn and Titans as Warner Bros continue to build their DC output on the platform.
The third season of Doom Patrol saw the arrival of Madame Rouge, played by the outstanding Michelle Gomez, who has shaken up things with her hidden deep connection to Timothy Dalton’s Niles Caulder aka The Chief. The first half of the season has also increased the threat of the Sisterhood of Dada, and seen the group turning into zombies, and thanks to the new teaser, we have been given our first look at what to expect from the rest of the current season.

While there are a lot of complications currently occupying the Doom Patrol, series star Matt Bomer, who made a special appearance at the live stream event, said previously that the show still has a lot of space for character growth, and in particular will close the loop on the trauma of his character Larry Trainor.
“I love that group and those writers never fail to blow me away with what they come up with because they somehow find ways to outdo themselves, but it’s never ungrounded. It’s never so outlandish that it’s outside of the realm of possibility — I think it would be hard-pressed to find anything out of the realm of possibility for the show at this point,” Bomer said. “This season, particularly for Larry and what he’s going through, is just so fun to get to play and I feel like the writing is stronger than ever on the show.”
He continued, “I wish I were down there in person more often but I also love the freedom of getting to find Larry in the booth as well. I love it and I think fans are really going to love what’s to come this season. Season 2 obviously dealt with trauma and this season kind of closes the loop on that because we had to finish early but also going to these new places with all the characters.”
There has not been any idea given as to when the new season of Doom Patrol will air, but with the current season not due to conclude until November 11th, it is unlikely we will see the fourth season until very late in 2022 or, more realistically, early 2023. As with previous seasons, there is every expectation that the characters who make it out of the current season alive will be back for the new one. The cast as of now includes, along with Gomez and Dalton, April Bowlby, Diane Guerrero, Matt Bomer, Brendan Fraser, Joivan Wade, Riley Shanahan, and Matthew Zuk.
Doom Patrol’s first two seasons along with season three so far are all available on HBO Max. This news was among many announcement to be made at DC FanDome.
