The recently-released Never Let Go starring Halle Berry is impressing critics, with many calling it one of the best horror films of the year. Meanwhile, general audiences have been a bit slow to embrace the latest directorial effort from Alexandre Aja (Crawl), earning $5 million at the worldwide box office thus far on a $20 million budget. If Never Let Go makes its money back and then some, Berry has revealed that a prequel and several sequels to the horror film could be on the way.
While speaking to ComicBook, Halle Berry and fellow cast members, Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins, were asked about potential sequels to Never Let Go. The child actors joked that they hoped to make more movies in the Never Let Go universe, “even if the movie doesn’t do well.” No matter the case, Berry revealed that “We have stories figured out – we have a prequel and sequels figured out.” It’s pretty safe to assume that the financial success of the film will impact its future as a horror franchise, but it is exciting to hear that expanding the Never Let Go world has always been the goal, especially since the story leaves the door open for the cast’s return.
How Never Let Go Could Be A Franchise
Never Let Go follows a mother and her two sons surviving an apocalypse when a supernatural “evil” takes over the world while living in an isolated house in the woods. Halle Berry’s overprotective Mamma insists that her sons, Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins), must be tethered to her at all times and are urged to never let go. However, when one of the sons begins to question their apocalyptic reality and the existence of the evil, all hell breaks loose (literally). The film, known for its disturbing sequences, does not give easy answers to the many questions it poses by the end of the film. A sequel following the main characters is not only possible but heavily teased, as well as a prequel starring Berry’s character, potentially before she becomes a mother.
After appearing in John Wick: Chapter 3, Halle Berry could find her staple franchise in Never Let Go. Due to the parameters of the film, Berry could return as her character in both a prequel and a sequel. She would also be joined by up-and-coming talents who have already made their mark on the big screen. Both Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins have been praised for their performances in the film, in addition to Berry’s harrowing role as Momma. A Never Let Go sequel could primarily follow the siblings in the eventful aftermath of the first film, left purposely ambiguous.
