Though the wait for House of the Dragon season 2 will be quite long, that hasn’t stopped Tom Glynn-Carney, who portrays Aegon II Targaryen, from teasing what’s to come. The first season of the HBO Game of Thrones prequel followed House Targaryen and House Hightower, two families vying for the Iron Throne and control over the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.
Carney took over the role of Aegon in the eighth episode of the debut season, following a six-year time jump requiring a recasting of the child actors. His character has been interesting, to say the least, with his mother, Alicent Hightower, and grandfather, Otto Hightower, plotting to usurp the throne and plant Aegon II as King. However, Aegon’s step-sister, Rhaenyra, has her own claim to the throne, which should lead to the inevitable Dance of the Dragons on which the show is based. The bloody civil war of House Targaryen is brewing, and the upcoming season will begin to depict the war in all its glory. Carney recently appeared at the official Game of Thrones convention, where he discussed his preparation for the second season and the immense amount of work required for House of the Dragon. Entertainment Weekly caught a few of his statements, which tease a “strenuous” season 2.

“All I can tell you is that we’re training very hard and we are making sure our bodies are in good enough condition for how strenuous season 2 is gonna be,” Carney says. Fans should expect plenty of fights and battle sequences in the upcoming season, a drastic change from the slower first season, which focused heavily on the character development and their motivations. He also discussed his character as a whole and why Aegon isn’t a complete psychopath as he sometimes seems to be in House of the Dragon.
“He was always gonna be a tricky one because, on paper, he can very easily come across as an out-and-out villain, and someone who’s dark and cold,” Carney explains. “I think he is all of those things, but I think there’s way more layers to him, as well. He’s not an out-and-out psychopath. There are complexities and intricacies within him that make him an absolute gift to play. Keeps me guessing, so hopefully that translates to keep everyone else on their toes.”

House of the Dragon is Full of Grey Characters
Nothing is entirely black and white in the world created by George R.R. Martin, as the ensemble cast of characters are all complex. Whether it’s Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arc), Daemon (Matt Smith), or Carney’s Aegon, everyone has a story with righteous decisions and evil ones.
Ultimately, alliances were formed over the first season, which will carry over into the next. The Greens, consisting of the Hightowers and several children of Viserys (Paddy Considine), and the Blacks, with Rhaenyra and her children, are at odds with one another, with the succession of the Iron Throne and the power of Westeros up for grabs. The civil war that ensues should be quite a bloody affair, which is nothing new for Game of Thrones fans.
Unfortunately, the second season of House of the Dragon won’t reach viewers anytime soon, as filming won’t begin until March 2023. With the lengthy VFX and shooting schedule, it’s unlikely fans will see any return to King’s Landing and the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros until sometime in 2024. Until then, fans can stream the entirety of Game of Thrones and the first season of House of the Dragon, available now on HBO Max.
