Murphy Mason is back In the Dark for season 3 on The CW, premiering Wednesday, June 23. The series, which has been shooting its second seasons since November 2020, has already been renewed for season 4.
The plot centers around Murphy Mason, a blind woman in her twenties. Played by Perry Mattfeld, this character is introverted and self-destructive, but she finds a new purpose in trying to find out who killed her friend. The series, created by Corinne Kingsbury, also stars Brooke Markham as Jess Damon, Murphy’s best friend; Morgan Krantz as Felix Bell, Murphy’s colleague and friend; Rich Sommer as Dean Riley, a cop; Casey Deidrick as Max Parish, who becomes romantically involved with Murphy; Keston John as Darnell James, a local gang leader; and a dog named Levi as Pretzel, Murphy’s guide dog.
In real life, Mattfeld is not blind, though she is playing a blind character, which led to some criticism. For instance, actor James Moore has cerebral palsy, as does his character on Emmerdale, as reported by Digital Spy. In 2019, he tweeted, “Yet another show casting a non disabled actor in a disabled role. At the end of the day- the product will suffer. The best actor to play a disabled part will always be disabled themselves. The difference is in life experience. No matter the character.” In The Dark executive producer Nicky Weinstock stated that blind actors were considered but that the team behind the scenes thought Perry was best for the role. “We went about searching for a blind actor immediately and looked all over,” he said at a Television Critics Association press tour, via The Wrap. “We saw many, many auditions, and ultimately we went with Perry because she was the best actor for the role in a really exciting way.”
Despite the criticism, In The Dark has an average audience score of 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, and fans have been anxiously awaiting more episodes. So what can we expect for Season 3? Well, the series’ Twitter account shared the official trailer and key art, showing that the main characters are on the run. For those who have forgotten, Murphy started up a relationship with Josh Wallace, a federal agent portrayed by Theodore Bhat … a federal agent who will team up with Gene Clemmons, a Chicago police officer who is portrayed by Matt Murray … and a federal agent who is on this big case that now involves Murphy.
