Jimmy Kimmel Joke About Congresswoman Reported to Capitol Police

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene says she has filed a formal complaint with Capitol Police over a joke told about her on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

ABC

Cracking wise about politicians has long been something that happens daily on late-night talk shows, but Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene feels Jimmy Kimmel went too far with a joke told about her on his show this week. During Tuesday night’s monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the comedian referred to the Congresswoman as “Klan mom” and seemed to suggest he’d like to see Will Smith give her a slap instead of Chris Rock. As Kimmel put it on the show:

“This woman, Klan mom, is especially upset with the three Republican senators who said they’ll vote yes on Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, who’s nominated for the Supreme Court. She tweeted, ‘Murkowski, Collins, and Romney are pro-pedophile. They just voted for KBJ.’ Wow. Where is Will Smith when you really need him?”

This comment did not sit well with Greene. The Georgia Republican tweeted a video clip of the joke in question to announce that she’s taking action against Kimmel. Tagging ABC, which airs Jimmy Kimmel Live, Greene said the remark constitutes a “threat of violence” against her. Furthermore, Greene says that her complaint has been “filed with Capitol Police.”

“Officer? I would like to report a joke,” Kimmel wrote on Twitter in direct response to Greene, clearly not intimidated by the alleged complaint filing.

As of now, the Capitol Police have not publicly responded to the announcement.

Jimmy Kimmel Is Not the Only Comic Whose Material Has Drawn Ire from Politicians

NBC

In 2020, Jimmy Kimmel invited John Mulaney as a guest on the show where the latter spoke about a similar situation, but this one involved the Secret Service and the then-president of the United States. The situation stemmed from Mulaney hosting Saturday Night Live in February 2020. Mulaney made a joke on the show about how Julius Caesar was murdered by senators and that it would “be an interesting thing if we brought that back now.” While Mulaney did not mention any specific politician by name, he says he had to explain himself to the Secret Service as a result.

“I guess they opened a file on me because of the joke, and I have to say: Am I stoked there’s a file open on me? Absolutely. Did I enjoy it in the moment? Not so much,” Mulaney told Kimmel about what happened, adding that he was asked if he had previously written any “manifestos” about Donald Trump online. “I said, ‘No. I have bad writing habits. I could never pound out a manifesto… I was cleared by the Secret Service – I’ve been told.”

We will see if any consequences come Kimmel’s way due to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene stating that she’s filed a complaint with Capitol Police. For now, chances are Kimmel will continue to joke about Greene and other politicians on his late-night program, and the same will ring true for all of the other late-night TV comics.
