Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan and the great David Oyelowo are executive producing the new stand-alone series, Lawmen: Bass Reeves. The striking images were revealed to an eager public, heralding the next chapter in Sheridan’s empire of Western TV shows. With a planned debut on Paramount+ later this year, on Nov. 5, this continuation pledges to engage viewers with a rejuvenating story and a top-tier ensemble cast. You can watch the new trailer below:

Headlined by the brilliant two-time Emmy nominee (and executive producer here) David Oyelowo, Lawmen: Bass Reeves follows the groundbreaking story of its namesake, Bass Reeves, the first Black U.S. Marshal in the American West. An eight-episode series, the first visuals of the show were showcased via Vanity Fair.

The images introduce us to an ensemble cast: David Oyelowo as Reeves, Lauren E. Banks as Reeves’ wife Jennie, Shea Whigham, Barry Pepper as the ex-Confederate soldier Esau Pierce, Demi Singleton as Reeves’ daughter Sally, Forrest Goodluck as Billy Crow, and Dennis Quaid as Sherrill Lynn. Alongside these, expect to see familiar faces like Donald Sutherland and Garrett Hedlund in guest roles.

The series, filmed in the vast landscapes of Texas, aims to resurrect the legendary lawman of the wild west, regarded as “the greatest frontier hero in American history.” Working in the challenging times of the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer, Reeves made a name for himself by capturing thousands of dangerous criminals, astonishingly without ever being wounded.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves Is a Stand-Alone Western

Paramount

Paramount+ has been excelling at Western series recently, from the Western-tinged crime drama of Joe Pickett to the Yellowstone universe and its spinoff, 1883, that depicted the journey of the Dutton family across the Great Plains. 1883 gave us an intense portrayal of Western expansion and a family’s desperate quest to escape poverty, with an ensemble that boasted names like Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Billy Bob Thornton, Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Audie Rick, Marc Rissmann, Eric Nelsen, and James Landry Hébert.

With Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Chad Feehan takes up the role of creator and showrunner. Sure to bring in audiences of 1883 and other recent Western shows, this forthcoming, self-contained anthology series pledges to unveil a distinctive narrative, mirroring the complex and abundant history of the American West.

The revelation of these images is more than a mere preview; it’s an invitation to a fresh and riveting narrative that can be watched entirely on its own as a stand-alone show. The series’ blend of powerful storytelling, historical exploration, and stellar acting is poised to make Lawmen: Bass Reeves a standout entry in what is becoming an ever-expanding franchise.

In an age where the Western genre seemed to have settled into the background, Taylor Sheridan’s work, including his production on this latest stand-alone show, reinvigorates the theme and brings it to the forefront once again. As audiences await the arrival of Lawmen: Bass Reeves on Paramount+ on Sunday, Nov. 5, anticipation builds for what promises to be another thrilling ride through the untamed landscapes of American history.
