Longlegs star Maika Monroe finds her next project in her busy horror schedule, this time a twisted take on Bram Stoker’s classic vampire tale. Monroe, who made her name known in the cult classic It Follows, continues to find herself enraptured by terrifying tales that flip the genre on its head. Next time she’s on the big screen, Monroe will encounter an “Eden of vampire brides” in a new film from FilmNation Entertainment.
Via Deadline, Monroe is set to star in Brides, directed by Chloe Okuno (Watcher). Currently in pre-production, the upcoming vampire flick is produced by Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu through Likely Story, who describe the project as “gothic, glamorous, and gory.” In many ways, it will subvert expectations of Bram Stoker’s Dracula by seemingly focusing on the vampiric brides, which come into contact with Monroe’s Sally Bishop when she and her husband go on a trip. Bergman goes as far as to say that the movie will actually “redefine the horror genre” thanks to the acclaimed director and “dynamic” script. Bergman:
“
Brides
is set to redefine the horror genre with Choe Okuno’s unique blend of feminist themes and gory visuals. The script is dynamic and unsettling in all the best ways. Chloe always brings such dread and complexity to her characters, and we can’t wait to work with her and Maika to bring Sally to life or to un-death as the case may be.”
If the previous details did not get horror fans excited enough for Brides, perhaps the official plot synopsis will suffice:
“Set in 1960s Italy, Sally Bishop (Monroe) and her husband travel to a remote villa in the wake of Sally’s nervous breakdown. The villa’s owner, a mysterious count, takes a peculiar interest in Sally. But he gets far more than he anticipated when Sally’s feminist chaos is added to his perfect, violent Eden of vampire brides.”
Maika Monroe Has a Busy Horror Schedule
In addition to Brides, Monroe is set to star in another horror remake. She is set to lead in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, a remake of the 1992 movie of the same name. The film follows Monroe as a recent widow who seeks vengeance against a mother while posing as a nanny, with the intent of ruining her life and eventually murdering her. She plays the villain in that film, turning from the horror protagonist, easy to root for, to the very force that terrorizes them. Other than Brides, Monroe seems to want to diversify her horror slate by playing both sides of the evil-good scale. Of course, still expect to see the It Follows breakout star continue being a modern horror icon.
Related Longlegs Proved Maika Monroe Is the Final Girl Horror Needs Right Now
Maika Monroe has been stacking up nuanced final girl roles in some of the genre’s best horror films & Longlegs further solidifies her status.
A sequel to Longlegs is more than possible at this point, especially since it impressed at the box office. Although Nicolas Cage, who played the titular serial killer, would possibly not reprise his role for obvious reasons, it seems Monroe and company are down for more stories featuring the gifted FBI agent, especially since the film ends quite ambiguously. Still, the director, Oz Perkins, isn’t exactly jumping at the opportunity for another Longlegs, as it seems too easy of an answer to the film’s surprising success with critics and audiences alike. Until any further news on that horror front, fans can still see Monroe star in plenty of movies in the re-emerging genre.
