Louder and Prouder Renewed for Season 2

It’s getting Louder and Prouder over on Disney+. Earlier today, the streaming service announced on its official Twitter account that The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is coming back for a second season! The tweet has also been bumped by series creator Bruce W. Smith, who added his own “Hear ye, Hear ye!”

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is the revival and sequel series to the hit Disney animated original, The Proud Family. Both series follow average teen Penny Proud (Kyla Pratt) as she gracefully walks, and occasionally stumbles, through life. Helping Penny through her troubles are her mother Trudy Proud (Paula Jai Parker), father Oscar Proud (Tommy Davidson), and grandmother Suga Mama (Jo Marie Payton). There’s also her baby siblings, BeBe & CeCe Proud (Tara Strong). Also helping Penny out (and in) of trouble are her friends, Dijonay (Karen Malina White), Zoey (Soleil Moon Frye), LaCienega (Alisa Reyes) and Sticky (Orlando Brown).

The Proud Family, while a down-to-earth sitcom, featured plenty of hijinks and cartoon fun while still covering many serious topics. After its premiere in 2001, the series was a massive success for audiences and critics alike. The show ran for two seasons and finished off with a TV movie that premiered in 2005. Things grew quiet for a while, then The Proud Family was added to the Disney+ library in 2019. Shortly after, rumors began to spread, which led to Davidson revealing the big news. The Proud Family was coming back!

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is more of what fans have always loved about the original show. The original cast has all returned to reprise their roles, minus a few outliers and changes. The previous supporting character Michael (Phil LaMarr in the original series) has been bumped into the friend group and is now gender non-conforming, along with being voiced by EJ Johnson. Sticky and his family have also moved out of town, leaving his old house to be bought up by the Leibowitz-Jenkins family. The family broke ground as being a two-dad married couple with their two adopted children, Maya (Keke Palmer) and her brother KG (Artist Dubose).

In its previous series, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder broke all new grounds in the world of positive representation. While the first series was praised for how it portrayed black families of all shapes and sizes, the sequel series was praised for its positive portrayal of LGBTQ+ members and families. Series creator Bruce Wayne Smith, who returned to produce Louder and Prouder, is no stranger to breaking barriers. His directorial film debut, 1992’s Bebe’s Kids, was credited as the first animated film to feature a majority black cast. He had this to say with Polygon about the low representation of black heroes and main characters in the realm of animation.

“We’re good with being trailblazers. If we’re blazing a path for ourselves to continue to kind of explore this animated sphere, with projects that delve in lots of different genres that we seem to be excluded from.”

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder was all the same love, comedy, and heart of its original incarnation. Fans were happy to see their favorite characters return for more of the same fun with some fresh and well-needed updates. Here’s to more laughs coming from the Proud Family team and their unforgettable family!
