Marvel Saved From Being Shut Out of Golden Globes by WandaVision Lead Stars

Marvel has not had the best of times at awards ceremonies, and their expansion into TV hasn’t brought much more cheer with only 2 Golden Globe nods.

After so much potential on the Emmy’s nomination list, Marvel has failed to secure the nominations that they might have hoped for after their first year on Disney+ and number of high profile movie releases. However, as the Golden Globe nominations were announced, it was only thanks once again to the acting leads of WandaVision that Marvel found themselves in the running for a shot at scooping something from the high profile event. In the categories covering Limited Television Series, it came down to Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany to save the day with their nominations in Best Actress and Best Actor categories respectively, although this time Kathryn Hahn wasn’t joining them in her Supporting Actress role.

The expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Disney+ seemed to be a prime way for Marvel to get a foothold in a number of awards ceremonies that they have previously been shut out of due to lack of content made for television. With WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and Loki, Disney and Marvel probably thought that they would have a good shout among the nominations when some of the biggest nights in TV came about. While not all of the shows were eligible for nominations, with Loki arriving too late for a shot at the Emmy’s this year, WandaVision has been the only Marvel offering to find themselves in the shortlist, thanks to its main stars.

While the show was nominated for a number of awards at the Primetime Emmy’s, they walked away with only a few Creative Emmy awards for technical achievements, and one for the song Agatha All Along, which was probably one of the most unexpected nominations garnered by the show. When it came to the Acting awards, all of the nominations came to nothing, which was a huge disappointment for Marvel, but perhaps not entirely unexpected as Marvel have never had the best of luck when it comes to winning major category awards in respect of their movies.

This time around, Olsen finds herself once again up against Kate Winslet for her role in Mare of Easttown, as well as Jessica Chastain, Cynthia Erivo and Margaret Qualley, while Bettany will take on some other Marvel stars in Oscar Isaac for his role in Scenes From a Marriage and Micheal Keaton for Dopestick, as well as Ewan McGregor and Tahar Raheem rounding out the nominations. Of the nominations, Winslet and McGregor will be looking to follow up their Emmy wins with the same result at the Golden Globes, and there will not be many who would bet against them once again taking the prizes this time around.

The Golden Globes will be held on January 9th, 2022, but it has not yet been decided whether the event will be televised. After being hit with complaints about a lack of diversity amongst its voting body, which led to many studios including Netflix, WarnerMedia and Amazon all threatening to boycott the awards and NBC declining to air the ceremony. 21 new members were added to its voting body in response to increase the diversity amongst voters, but whether the event is televised or not remains to be seen. You can find a list of all nominations for this years Golden Globes on the official site.
