After years of speculation, fans finally know when The Batman – Part II will begin filming and if it can make its planned 2026 release date. Ever since The Batman hit theaters in March 2022, fans have been eagerly awaiting a sequel, and while HBO’s The Penguin served as a nice appetizer, The Batman – Part II still feels like a long way out. Now, director Matt Reeves has given fans a positive update that puts The Dark Knight’s future in context.
Speaking with The Batman star Zoë Kravitz for Variety about her directorial debut Blink Twice, Reeves dropped a hint on the status of The Batman – Part II. “We’re finishing the script. We’re going to be shooting next year,” Reeves told Kravitz, with the movie beginning production in 2025. Meanwhile, he also revealed that talks are already underway for more seasons of The Penguin. “We’re talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about doing another season,” Reeves said.
The Batman – Part II is currently set for an Oct. 2, 2026 release date, meaning if the camera begins rolling in 2025, it could likely meet its planned release date. The film was initially set for release on Oct. 3, 2025, but was delayed earlier this year, likely to allow Reeves to spend more time working on the script. No details about The Batman – Part II are currently known, but if filming is to begin in 2025, expect casting announcements to start to roll out.
Will ‘The Batman – Part II’ Become Part of the DCU?
The question on everyone’s mind right now is the status of Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II and whether it will remain in its own separate continuity or be folded into James Gunn’s new DCU. While The Batman and The Penguin certainly don’t seem like they would exist in the same universe as Creature Commandos or the upcoming Superman, many fans are speculating that the original plans for Reeves’ Batman and Gunn’s Brave and the Bold film might have changed. Reeves is currently involved in two separate Batman-related projects that are set in the DCU, Mike Flanagan’s Clayface movie and the animated film Dynamic Duo, which will focus on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd Robin.

Everything We Know About The Batman Part II
As The Penguin ends, fans are craving more of Robert Pattinson’s Batman. Here’s what’s known so far about the secretive Batman sequel.
Clayface is an interesting title, as it is currently set to open in theaters on Sept. 11, 2026, three weeks before The Batman – Part II. With two Batman-related projects so close together, many expected The Batman – Part II to be delayed again, but the movie is seemingly on schedule. If The Batman – Part II were to be delayed into 2027, that would mean a five-year gap between The Batman and its sequel, and it would even be eight years from when Robert Pattinson was first cast as Batman. For reference, eight years is the amount of time between when Christian Bale was first cast in Batman Begins and the release of The Dark Knight Rises. As Reeves continues to work on the script, at least fans rest assured that enough time will be spent getting The Batman sequel just right.
