reboot, and credits the team for a positive experience. - Fans speculated about a revival after Jesse Tyler Ferguson posted a photo of the Dunphy house set.
- Sofía Vergara believes it’s too soon for a reboot.
Modern Family ended in 2020, but talk of a reboot has already been building momentum recently. After 11 seasons, it appeared that the show revolving around the lives of Jay Pritchett, his children, Claire and Mitchell, and their respective families had come to its natural conclusion. However, star Ed O’Neill, who played patriarch Jay, has stoked the fires of expectation that perhaps a four-year hiatus is enough to warrant a revival of the series.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, O’Neill suggested that he would not be against returning to the role again, but ultimately the decision is one that really lies with other people. Although he noted that he does not usually go in for character revivals, he would make an exception for Modern Family thanks to the team he worked with on the series. He said:
I mean, I am open to it. I like everybody involved, so I wouldn’t be the guy who [says no if everyone else wants to]. I wouldn’t do that.

O’Neill’s comments have added to speculation that something could be brewing in the Modern Family world, especially when they came just a day after Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who played Mitchell Pritchett, shared an image of the Dunphy house set. He captioned the image, “Haven’t seen this view in a while.” Naturally, fans swamped the post with comments asking whether this was a tease of a new series being in development, but Ferguson offered nothing further.
One Modern Family Star Thinks It is Too Soon for a Reboot
While there are clearly several cast members who would be willing to reprise their Modern Family roles, and fans always want more of any popular show, one star who has reservations is Sofia Vergara. The actress, who plays Gloria in the show, addressed the possibility of a reboot earlier in the year, and gave the clear view that she feels it is too soon to bring the show back. She said at the time:
“No, it’s only been four years. I don’t know, but it doesn’t seem right. I feel like they need, we need a little more time.”
While it is clear that there are no official plans to reboot Modern Family right now, the reunion of the cast at the 2024 SAG Awards created a viral moment that saw many fans reminiscing about their favorite moments from the series, and, naturally, calling for its return. For now, fans will have to settle for reliving the 11 seasons of the show that can be found streaming on Hulu, and perhaps, in the future, there could be more seasons to add to that number.
