Netflix has provided our first look at their upcoming anime adaptation of Scott Pilgrim, which is due to land on the streaming platform in November. Coming courtesy of the official Netflix YouTube channel, the now titled series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will transform Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels into anime form, and features the cast of the acclaimed 2010 live action movie, including Michael Cera as the titular Scott Pilgrim and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers. Check out the first trailer for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off below.
Based on the comic series Scott Pilgrim, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will follow the character, a slacker and part-time musician who lives in Toronto, who falls in love with a mysterious girl named Ramona Flowers. However, dating her will be a lot more difficult than Scott thinks, as he must first defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her in peace.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has been written by Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, and counts Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director Edgar Wright among its producers. The original cast from the movie are all set to return, which means Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will feature the voices of Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Johnny Simmons as young Neil, Mark Webber as Stephen Stills, and Ellen Wong as Knives Chau, with Satya Bhabha, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman and Mae Whitman as Ramona’s Evil Exes.
If that were not already enough to tempt you, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will also feature music from composer Joseph Trapanese alongside original songs by Anamanaguchi, who previously worked on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game.

Scott Pilgrim Takes off Will Deviate From the Comics & Movie
Universal Pictures
Producer Edgar Wright has heaped praise on the returning Scott Pilgrim vs. the World cast, and cannot wait to continue the adventure alongside them. “Luckily, the Scott Pilgrim cast became a close-knit family and friendships were forged for life,” the filmmaker said to Netflix Tudum. “There — to this day — is still a group email with the entire cast on it, that’s been going since 2010. I was happy to be able to reach out to everyone with the news that we had finally come up with a way to continue the adventure. Seeing (and hearing) everyone come back to their roles has been a true pleasure.”
Wright has also revealed that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will deviate somewhat from both the source material and the movie. “I knew that a live action sequel was unlikely, but I would usually defer by suggesting that perhaps an anime adaptation was an interesting way to go,” he said. “And then, lo and behold, one day Netflix got in touch to ask about this exact idea. But even better, our brilliant creator Bryan Lee O’Malley had an idea that was way more adventurous than just a straight adaptation of the original books.”
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is scheduled to be released on Netflix on November 17, 2023. Add it to your list today!
