Per the L.A. Times, MacFarlane was asked if the series could carry on for another 25 years, and he doubled down on an answer he once gave before about the series’ future. MacFarlane stated that he doesn’t see “a good reason” to end the show yet and pointed to the continued interest of the fans to keep the series going.

“At this point, I don’t see a good reason to stop. People still love it. It makes people happy and it funds some good causes. It’s a lot of extraneous cash that you can donate to Rainforest Trust and you can still go out to dinner that night. There was a time when I thought, it’s time to wrap it up. At this point, we’ve reached escape velocity. I don’t know that there’s any reason to stop at this point unless people get sick of it. Unless the numbers show that people just are, ‘Eh, we don’t care about Family Guy anymore.’ But that hasn’t happened yet.”

Family Guy is Still a Ratings Winner After 22 Seasons

Even after 22 seasons and a timeslot change that saw this series move from its comfy Sunday home to Wednesday nights, Family Guy is still pulling in solid numbers across multiple platforms. Proving its continued power, the series is still a pop culture staple and maintains a strong presence on social media. In many ways, it has become like The Simpsons, another long-running animated sitcom that continues to have goodwill with fans, which has allowed it to thrive for many years.

Family Guy premiered in 1999 on Fox and has had one of the most unpredictable yet successful runs on television. The series was initially canceled after its third season had aired in 2002, but one unaired episode premiered on Adult Swim in 2003, which was set to end the show’s run. However, after DVD sales were favorable and ratings were strong from its syndicated reruns, Fox revived the series in 2004, with its fourth season airing in 2005.

The show has now aired over 400 episodes, and it has accomplished other significant milestones across its run. In 2009, the series was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, marking the first time an animated series had been nominated for the award since The Flintstones in 1961. The show also spawned a spin-off series called The Cleveland Show, which ran from 1999-2013 and had 88 episodes.

Family Guy centers on the Griffins, a highly dysfunctional family living in the fictional city of Quahog, Rhode Island. The Griffins consist of parents Peter (MacFarlane) and Lois (Alex Borstein), their children, Meg (Mila Kunis), Chris (Seth Green), and Stewie (MacFarlane), and their pet dog, Brian (also MacFarlane). Primarily satirical in nature, the series has become known for lampooning American culture in a way that is often funny, but has also been known to generate its fair share of criticism and controversy.
