Showrunner Scott Neustadter Teases A Second Season For Daisy Jones & The Six

Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & the Six still lives in the hearts of audiences weeks after the show’s smashing debut. The widely acclaimed musical drama depicts the tale of the biggest fictional rock band of the 70s, chronicling their rise within the music industry and subsequent fall while at the height of the band’s success. The miniseries is based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s eponymous novel that was loosely based on Reid’s experiences watching Fleetwood Mac performances growing up. Though Daisy Jones & The Six was meant to be a limited program, the series co-creator and showrunner Scott Neustadter recently teased that he’s developed more ideas for the band and their story should Amazon want to renew the series.

At Deadline’s Contenders Television Panel, Neustadter mentioned that though the initial series was based on Reid’s bestseller, he’s already developed a pitch abound with more ideas that expand upon the band’s story. The ideas are based on questions that arose at the series’ conclusion, but only with Reid’s blessing would Neustadter be open to doing more with the series.

“What’s cool is that the show does have an ending that hopefully is satisfying. We answered all the questions that we raised, but I do think on the way out the door we asked a few new questions. That’s always my favorite kind of ending. There’s opportunity to keep telling the story; obviously, we’d want to talk with Taylor.”

It would seem that Reid and Neustadter are on the same page concerning the continuation of Daisy & The Six’s story. She recently expressed interest in a second season during an exclusive with Variety. Like Neustadter, she believes the series ended conclusively, rounding out the messy and rocky story of the band as depicted in her novel. However, she also has considered other ideas that would reopen their story for another season.

“I think we’re in a really fortunate position where we have a story that is final, and has an ending that feels really good. I would only open that back up if it felt like there was a story here that we have to tell. Have I been thinking about what that is? I certainly have.”

A main driving force in why Reid isn’t ruling out another season comes from the dynamic performances of the cast, especially Riley Keough as the leading lady and songwriter Daisy Jones and Sam Claflin as Billy Dunne, the founder of The Six.

“To see the performances that you have from this cast, and specifically Riley and Sam, and be willing to walk away from that without asking yourself whether you could give them another opportunity to dig into these characters would be very silly. I’m not so stupid as to not recognize what we have in the two of them. So it’s definitely on my mind.”

There Was a Musical Learning Curve For the Lead Actors

Prime Video

Daisy Jones & The Six featured a compelling, rollercoaster ride of a journey for the eponymous band members. Though the band’s musical heydays, nadir moments, and complicated relationships were major focal points of their tales, the original musical soundtrack took center stage in the show and among audiences. To make the series feel believable and more authentic, all the actors played (or learned to play) their instruments and even went to band camp together to learn how to be a cohesive unit. During the Deadline’s Contenders Television Panel, the series’ leads — Riley Keough and Sam Claflin — spoke on the learning curve they each conquered to truly embody their roles as 70s rockstars.

“When I first read the script, I looked over all of the moments that it said that we’re performing on stage and Billy was carrying a guitar. I kind of came in going ‘I can’t wait to do some acting’. Little did I know there was quite a lot of music involved in this story about the band,” mentioned Clafin who initially wasn’t aware beforehand of how big of a role music played in the series. “It was very, very difficult. I’m not gonna lie, I have never picked a guitar up before.”

Keough, on the other hand, was privy to how deeply ingrained the music would be for her role and came prepared to put in the extra work to step into the role of Daisy Jones.

“Unlike Sam, I read the script, so I knew how much music there was. We had to work really hard at the music stuff. There were many days where we were doing hours and hours of guitar and piano and voice lessons and it wasn’t something that came really naturally to Sam and I in the beginning. We had to put in more work than I’ve ever put in to learn a skill for a job before.”

All episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six are available exclusively through Prime Video.
