Stranger Things Season 5 Aims for Originality Deviating from Narrative Patterns Like That of Game of Thrones

Summary

  • Director Dan Trachtenberg clarifies that Stranger Things Season 5 won’t follow the Game of Thrones pattern of a slow build-up to a big battle at the end.
  • Fans can expect the iconic music theme to continue in the upcoming season, with Trachtenberg teasing its continuation.
  • Actor David Harbour promises a satisfying closure for the beloved characters, as the show’s creators aim to pay them off in big ways after almost a decade of being a part of viewers’ lives.

The world of television series has witnessed its fair share of climactic successes and unfortunate letdowns. One of the current hot topics in TV entertainment is the eagerly awaited Season 5 of Netflix’s Stranger Things. In a recent chat with Variety, Dan Trachtenberg, the director for this season, made it clear that fans shouldn’t expect a Game of Thrones style arc. He said:

“I don’t think Stranger Things falls into a category of television seasons like Game of Thrones where the pilot is cool, slows down, and the last two episodes are the big battle.”

He clarified that fans wouldn’t see a pattern where the momentum starts strong, slows mid-season, only to climax in the final episodes.

Furthermore, music enthusiasts who’ve enjoyed the nostalgic rock and roll beats of past seasons have something more to look forward to. Trachtenberg teased the continuation of the iconic music theme in the upcoming season, which he was formally announced to be directing a segment of in June 2023.

One of the show’s mainstay actors, David Harbour, also recently shared insights on a podcast about what to anticipate. Reflecting on his character, Jim Hopper, and other fan favorites like Eleven, Joyce Byers, Will Byers, and Mike Wheeler, he shed light on the culmination of their narrative arcs. He pointed out that the show’s creators, The Duffer Brothers, intend to offer a satisfying closure for these characters who’ve been a part of viewers’ lives for almost a decade. “[Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers are] going to pay them off in big ways because they’ve lived with you for the past eight years,” Harbour emphasized.

It’s noteworthy that Harbour’s trust in the forthcoming finale isn’t based on any previews or script peeks. Rather, it’s anchored in profound conversations he’s had with the Duffer duo, Matt and Ross, about the destiny of each beloved character. In fact, Harbour revealed an interesting tidbit — he hasn’t yet delved into the finale’s script! Delving deeper into the off-screen events, he verified that the scripts for Season 5 were completed prior to the commencement of the Writers Guild of America strike.

Another linchpin of the series, Millie Bobby Brown, who’s dazzled audiences with her portrayal of Eleven, offered her personal perspective. Drawing a heartfelt analogy, she compared her journey on Stranger Things to a high school experience.

“It’s been such a huge factor in part of my life but it’s like graduating high school, it’s like senior year. You’re ready to go and blossom and flourish and you’re grateful for the time you’ve had, but it’s time to create your own message and live your own life.”

For newcomers to the Stranger Things phenomenon or those wanting to indulge in nostalgia, Netflix is streaming the first four seasons. For the time being, the unveiling date for Season 5 is kept hushed, meaning fans should brace for a little more suspense.

Stranger Things’ Season 5 looks forward to not just wrapping up past narratives but also showcasing genuine creativity, veering away from traditional TV blueprints. With committed directors, a passionate cast, and a narrative that has captivated millions, it seems poised to offer a farewell that will resonate long after its credits roll.
