The new The Big Bang Theory spin-off, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, has a lot of fans excited, as Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) and some other familiar supporting faces from the original show are being given their own series. Many fans were hoping that the spin-off would act as an unofficial reunion for the original TBBT cast, just like Young Sheldon did (as several of the OG cast returned through voice-overs). But, a new update from Warner Bros. has left that dream in a state of uncertainty.
During an interview with Deadline, Warner Bros. Television Group’s Chairperson and CEO, Channing Dungey, addressed the new The Big Bang Theory spin-off, how far in development the show is, and whether the original cast might return. The series is still in development, and hasn’t officially been greenlit by Warner Bros. for production yet. However, Dungey believes the show’s future is positive. “We’ve seen some material at the studio, and we’ve had some creative conversations with Max, so we are hopeful for good news soon,” Dungey said. The CEO was also asked about the state of the spin-off’s scripts. According to Dungey, new and old fans of The Big Bang Theory will be more than pleased with Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, saying:
“They are creative, they are imaginative, and they are, most importantly, very, very funny.”

The big question on fans’ minds regards the original The Big Bang Theory cast returning for SFTSTU. In past interviews, several OG cast members have said that they would love to return for more. Channing Dungey said that there is a possibility for the original cast to make cameos in the show. “I would never say never,” she began. However, she said that the emphasis of the new spin-off is on the supporting cast from TBBT who are finally being given the spotlight, continuing:
“We’re very excited and focused on our series regulars who have great stuff to do in these episodes.”
What to Expect From ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’
CBS
Stuart Bloom was potentially the last character fans were expecting the new Big Bang Theory spin-off to focus on. The comic book shop owner started out the show as a very minor character, before slowly being enveloped into the core group after the show’s halfway point to care for Howard’s (Simon Helberg) mother. Across the show’s 12 seasons, Stuart went from one of the show’s most tragic characters, to piecing his life together by opening up a revamped comic book shop, and moving in with his new girlfriend.
Plot details for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe haven’t been revealed yet, as the scripts are still in development. Alongside Sussman’s Stuart Bloom, the series will also star Lauren Lapkus (Denise), Brian Posehn (Burt), and John Ross Bowie (Barry). It is unclear how these mostly separated characters will fit together for the new spin-off. As Dungey teased, expect more (hopefully positive) updates in the near future.
