The Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Reboot Finds Its Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup

The CW’s live-action Powerpuff Girls reboot has found its leads. Chloe Bennet (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Dove Cameron (Descendants), and Yana Perrault (Jagged Little Pill) have just been tapped to play older versions of the animated trio, set years after their collaborative crimefighting adventures as children. Maggie Kiley directs using a script by Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier.

A live-action series, The Powerpuff Girls follows Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as disillusioned twentysomethings who no longer serve as America’s pint-sized superheroes. With a resentment for their lost childhood to crimefighting, will the trio known as the Powerpuff Girls agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?

In the pilot, which has yet to be officially ordered to series, Bennet will play Blossom Utonium. Though she is described as a “spunky, conscientious, Little-Miss-Perfect child who holds several advanced degrees, Blossom’s repressed kiddie-superhero trauma has left her feeling anxious and reclusive, and she aims to become a leader again – this time on her own terms.” Bennet is best known for her role as Skye on all seven seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Cameron, who won a Daytime Emmy for her role on the Disney Channel series Liv & Maddie, is also set to play Bubbles, the character whose “sweet-girl disposition won America’s hearts as a child. She still sparkles as an adult, but her charming exterior belies an unexpected toughness and wit. She’s initially more interested inrecapturing her fame than saving the world, but she just might surprise us and herself.”

Meanwhile, Perrault will round out the trio by playing Buttercup, the “rebellious badass of The Powerpuff Girls in its heyday. More sensitive than her tough exterior suggests, Buttercup has spent her adulthood trying to shed her Powerpuff Girl identity and live an anonymous life.” Perrault was recently seen on Broadway in the Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill.

Last August, it was announced that a live-action version of The Powerpuff Girls was in development at The CW, though the pilot was just officially ordered. Craig McCracken, who created the original cartoon series, is not attached to the reboot. However, McCracken does appear to be optimistic about how the live-action adaptation will turn out.

“I’m curious to see what they do with it,” McCracken told Syfy Wire in January. “The initial concept of Powerpuff Girls was the idea that they were little kids being superheroes, so the fact that they’re making them grow up, that sort of changes that initial concept. But we’ll see what they do with it.”

Created by McCracken, the animated series version ran for six seasons between 1998 and 2005. It followed three kindergarten-aged girls with superpowers working together to keep the planet safe. The voices were provided by Cathy Cavadini (Blossom), Tara Strong (Bubbles), and E. G. Daily (Buttercup).

The Powerpuff Girls is produced by Berlanti Productions and Vita Vera Films in association with Warner Bros. Television. Cody and Mars executive produce with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, David Madden, and Maggie Kiley. Erika Kennair also produces. This news comes to us from Deadline.
